I was talking to my friend about this last night. She works for insurers and she said that as it is an "act of God", most wont pay out.
Has anyone had any success?

Yes, as detailed on the many volcano related threads.0

Hopefully this event will make people buy cover not solely on price but on quality of cover and quality of Insurer.
Make a note of the honourable Insurers who have agreed to pay out at the earliest possible time and reward them with your future business.
Or just forget about this event in a few months, keep buying the cheapest possible policy and boasting on MSE about how cheap your cover was. Then when the next unusual event occurs that most companies do not cover come back on MSE and complain about it0 -
think someone has already mentioned on here that fortis are treating it, not as an act of god, but as a 'bad weather event'

although this only seems to apply to people currently in uk, not those stranded trying to get home!.0 -

It actually covers people who are abroad, note the words "Into the UK" "Delays to journeys from the UK and journeys into the UK"
Travel Insurance is one of the things Fortis excel at which is why most brokers use them as they have a well won reputation for wide policy cover and dealing with claims in a fair way.
It would be nice to think MSE members would remember Fortis and the other Insurers who are paying these claims when they buy cover next. As well as putting their policyholders minds at rest by publishing information about this as early as possible.
FH Brit and myself constantly recommend Fortis backed travel policies on MSE. It's not unusual for people to come back and say we looked at Fortis and they were £30 more expensive than acme insurance so we went with acme insurance. The chances are Fortis will be more expensive than other companies but as in anything in life quality comes at a price and you get what you pay for.
Brokers often make a comparison with Marks and Spencers and Insurance, M&S have plenty of customers who are prepared to pay more for their goods because you get better quality and back up service. A lot of people argue that insurance is different, until they come up against something like the Volcano issue and then they discover after the horse has bolted that this is the case.
There is a chance the other companies will back down as the Association of British Insurers are meeting with Insurers to try and resolve issues and no doubt as the election is very soon the Government are putting pressure on them to pay the claims.0 -
An Act of God - An act which is accepted legally as being outside human control
.So if insurance companies will pay out due to weather conditions which is 'An Act of God' then why not pay out for the Ash crisis just a thought" I would not change you for the world, but I would change the world for you"

covlass, that's the point. fortis are paying out!. They are treating this as bad weather, not as an act of god. One of the few companies to be doing so, which is why dacouch has made the comment above. Sometimes, it seems, you really do get what you pay for!0 -
You can get Fortis travel insurance without additional charge by taking out a Alliance and Leicester Premier current account, although you have to pay an additional fee if you want family cover, winter sports and cover outside Europe.0

Can anybody advise on my sons problem.
He was booked to go to Madrid last friday, obviously cancelled. Ryanair has refunded flights but the hotel was booked through Thomads Cook online. It states on their booking no cancellations but his insurance will pay out but they need a cancellation number.
How can he get a cancellation number?
Can anybody help please.

This is what i am attempting to do. I am currently with Insure and Go, and my annual travel insurance is up soon. I went with them as i heard that they were good with payouts, although i have been with them for 5+ years and never made a claim.
I would like to know what is actually good.0 -

DA - Here, Here - what we have been saying all along!
This could be a learning for those who pay £2.50 for 2 weeks insurance and then wonder why they don't get coverage.
Could this be the end of an era - something tells me that people will still buy cheap and end up having grief!C. (Ex-Pat Brit)
