MOT Advisories - Please advise

Thanks, would you be concerned if the car had failed the MOT for the last few years?
It depeneds what the failures were for. If it was for things like tyres/bulbs and washer fluid it shows the car has not been well cared for. If it was something like a wishbone bush then this sort of thing is much harder for a normal car owner to spot and is more forgivable.0 -
nor was I given the opportunity to see the paperwork before buying.
You bought the car without looking over the paperwork? Bad idea. Next you'll be saying you didn't check the VIN (vehicle identification number) on the chassis and engine.....
In all seriousness although the dealer didn't specifically tell you about these 'faults' he didn't exactly lie about them. Maybe he never read the paperwork either.
As others have said a car of that age is not going to be perfect and lets be honest, what did you pay for it £400-500? The MOT is only a test of it's road worthiness (have I just made up a word?) at the time of the test not a guarantee of its condition for 12 months. Expect some things to go wrong and budget for them.0 -
Well considering the garage that sold me the car was the garage that MOT'd it, yeah, I think they should have made me aware of the 'advisories'. And if you think you can get a 1999 Astra Estate for £400-500 you must be kidding. I paid £1200 for it.jimbo_the_jetset wrote: »You bought the car without looking over the paperwork? Bad idea. £1,200 ....
So you happily parted with your cash now you are looking for what? An excuse to get them to pay for unnecessary repairs?0 -
Not at all. I like the car else I wouldn't have bought it. It's low mileage, it's in very good cosmetic condition, etc. I was just looking for some advice as I have never owned a car before.£1,200 ....

Why do you automatically think I'm looking for an excuse for them to pay for anything? I simply asked 2 questions; whether or not these repairs are going to cost a significant sum (in which case should I reject the car) and should I be worried that the car failed the MOT's for the last few years.
Geez...get off your high horse, it's only a forum!!0 -
m8 do not worry to much about what the mot says it is only good on the day it is done
all cars will cost money over time i payed 4k for my car and in the first 6 months had to replace disc's and pad's and a few other bits cars just play up.

your car is moted for a year but save the money to replace the parts if they need doing next year and wait to see what they say on the next mot
but i do have to say you over payed for the car you can pick up a 52 plate from the same money but once again money is not eberything if your happy with what you got thats fine

Thanks. Unfortunately, I wanted to buy from a dealer rather than private and the fact that the car is an Automatic means there are less of them around, so had to stump up the moneym8 do not worry to much about what the mot says it is only good on the day it is done

You should still be more concerned about when the Cam belt was last changed as per your previous post about this car.0

The garage actually offered to change the Cam belt and have noted on the receipt that a new one has been fitted. You should still be more concerned about when the Cam belt was last changed as per your previous post about this car.
Thanks, I apologise for snapping but I am not trying to wriggle out of owning the car etc, maybe I'm just a bit too worried about faults that might not develop for years
