I think the whole idea is that you print it off, after all if you are ill you aren't expected to make a trip to the local tax office, are you?In giving

You could print one off, but unless I'm reading it wrong, it says it's for employees. Which he isn't. Wouldn't that make a difference? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

If you look at the link I posted, it mentions form SC1 for self certification for the unemployed/self employed.
Can be downloaded from directgov.co.uk but it seems awfully long for self certification. Wouldn't it be easier to phone the ESA helpline again?

Esa has nothing to do with the tax office0 -
Always nice when the websites aren't updated in line with changes, and neither are the advisers! Perhaps the adviser the OP spoke to misunderstood and didn't realise that the person claiming was unemployed. You would hope they'd understand their own rules, or is that too much to ask?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Obviously he'll get a fit note from the doctor for the rest of the time he's unwell, but would like a self certificate form for the first week.
When the process him claim, they automatically give him a 7 day self cert. You dont have to do anything. Just have to get a fit note from the 8th day onwards.

They arent really required anymore as the claim itself counts as self-certifying - that's even if SSP etc. was previously in payment.
Here is a link to the SC2 though http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/sc2.pdf0 -

Form SC2 can be used as a 'self cert' for the first 7 days by an employee to notify an enployer only for SSP purposes.0
