Police no MOT or Tax or insurance

You will find that your Britisih "Travelling" friends are actually quite particular about taking insurance cover out.
I assume they do it because the police have a habit of stopping them.
All the brokers I know have there "travelling" clients that come in and pay cash for their insurance. They are actually very loyal customers and normally the whole families always use the same broker.
A lot of them take motortrade policies.
But you're basing that view on the ones who go into the brokers you know and buy insurance. Therefore you wouldn't hear about the ones who dont bother going in at all.
I've defended many a fellow of "no fixed abode" for driving offences and 90% of the time it will come down to the prosecution tracing the driver accross the country after they've moved on and rushing it to court to beat the limitation of proceedings (6 months) and then if they finally get there, there's another 15 family members turn up all willing to say they could have been driving on the date in question and the officer can't specifically say it wasn't them after the time lapse. It was a nightmare!
ETA and futher to that, the Police have a habit of avoiding travellers as they can sometimes be so difficult to deal with for the above reasons and many, many more.
My father was a taxi driver and was the only driver who would collect passengers from the nearby traveller site. They ware great with my dad and never once failed to give a tip. He always spoke of thier honour and they appeared to be real salt of the earth people. But these were the ones who were happy to stay in one place and "be on the system" the ones who don't can be a handfull.0 -

6 points and a £200 fine is nothing. OK, so future premiums are increased, but that doesn't stop that person doing the same all over again. And a lot of the time they just don't bother to attend court. This is especially true of our "travelling" communities.
So you end up with councils paying a fortune to replace traffic lights and railings ruined by uninsured drivers, why also has a knock-on effect in taxes. Yet another example of our ancient Road Traffic Laws needing revision.
you are totally correct, the government reports there are 3 million people with out insurance (up 10 fold since they took power), the problem is most of these people have very little money so there's no profit in it for the government to chase them, far easier to install a yellow box and watch the cash roll in for driving 5mph over the limit.0 -
I've just ordered a brand new car (A Panda) and I will be paying nearly as much for insurance as the monthly payments on the car.
If I could not afford car insurance I would not drive. People need to realise that driving is not a legal or human right.0 -
Having no insurance should have a proper penalty...of the approximate annual insurance cost x2 and then a salary/benefit based fine and costs on top with automatic licence revocation for a number of years.
A £3 to £10K fine would wipe the smirk from their mugs.
It's not an alternative way to drive as some see it, if the uninsured driver hits a person or another car then any compensation paid out should be charged to the offender and they should be made to pay from their salaries or more likely benefit's for the rest of their lives if necessary...shan't hold me breath though.
This country is a soft touch for criminals whilst honest decent folk pay through the nose.0
