Lots of people in Bradford see nothing happen to them at all. Highest proportion of uninsured cars in the country.
Plus insurance costs what if you're young. £1000 or much more in high risk areas?! Why pay that when you can just ditch the £50 car, and get a stupidly low fine like £50 in court?!
Then eventually you get banned from driving, but you were driving illegally in the first place, so why is a ban going to stop you?!

You can buy a car for £50?
But surely, when you decide you want to learn to drive, either a friend/relative teaches you, or you pay for lessons. Having passed your test, you work out - can you afford to have a car of your own? Maybe you are too young (re: ins.) or not paid enough, so wait - time passes, both change - on the other hand maybe those who don't insure - won't grow up!

Its a good point, if insurance tax etc is thousands, just risk it until you get stopped.

You may be able to just walk away from the car Scot free, or the fines would be less than insurance etc anyway.

Its a bit like parking permits costing more than a parking ticket, just park illegal until you get a ticket and you are no worse off. There is always the chance you wont get caught for ages.

If they at some point sit/pass a test at all!

You can get a car for £0 if you look hard. For example if someone has a car they want rid of and plan to scrap it. Some cars people want to scrap are also half-decent cars. I guess the usual lowest price you see around is £300 to £400 though.

Sometimes it does say they were fined £££ & banned for x months.

I think my insurance is more than that fine, why do i bother?

Then someone on here posts they bought a car with no tax & got stopped on the way home. That would be me, The police would pull up as i started the engine.

if your a new driver no insurance in the first two years is an automatic ban with 6 points, disqualed drivers are often jailed, the courts see it as very serious, they take it as a personal f**k you to them and the system. My mate used to patrol the M20 and A2 and told me they used to regularly catch people driving away from court after getting a ban and dragged them straight back in front of the court, it was a very easy and quick way for them to get there target figures :p

if you have an accident with no insurance and someone is hurt the penalties are also vastly more severe

i dont know what its like in the rest of the country but in the SE there are tonnes of ANPR cameras, fixed ones all over the place, there are some on the M25, there are a fair few mobile ones and all the police area cars have them so drive past one of them and it will flag you.

i know a young lad who crashed his car(on the way home from buying it) and had no insurance
careless driving as well(hit a lamppost) gave him a total of 8 points and a whopping £100 fine
however he now has to retest and of course 8 points and having had no insurance will give him masive premiums for years

To be honest, the law doesn't hurt people enough for having no insurance. Most law abiding people pay through the nose for the policy so that a million or so can drive without any insurance.

6 points and a £200 fine is nothing. OK, so future premiums are increased, but that doesn't stop that person doing the same all over again. And a lot of the time they just don't bother to attend court. This is especially true of our "travelling" communities.

So you end up with councils paying a fortune to replace traffic lights and railings ruined by uninsured drivers, why also has a knock-on effect in taxes. Yet another example of our ancient Road Traffic Laws needing revision.

You will find that your Britisih "Travelling" friends are actually quite particular about taking insurance cover out.

I assume they do it because the police have a habit of stopping them.

All the brokers I know have there "travelling" clients that come in and pay cash for their insurance. They are actually very loyal customers and normally the whole families always use the same broker.

A lot of them take motortrade policies.
