In Whitby, much better value for fish & chips is Mr. Chips restaurant, i.e. walk over the bridge onto the south side of the harbour, just follow the road round the corner, Mr. Chips is on the left, only two minutes from the bridge, wouldn't go anywhere else!

    Hello studentphil

Here's another vote for Whitby. I posted this about Whitby in the 'Days Out' board, after a lovely day out to Whitby on the 15th July. If you're not familiar with Whitby, it is often the location used in the ITV1 drama 'Heatbeat'.;)

If you decide to go, I can also recommend the Magpie restaurant. It always has a long queue (so be prepared for a wait) outside but the food is delicious. My tip is........don't bother with a starter. You'll save some money and possibly (only possibly) manage to eat all of your main course if you don't have a starter. The portions are enormous.

Other seaside places to visit are Scarborough (slightly hilly), Bridlington and Filey.

Going inland, another 'Heartbeat' location is the village of Goathland. The North York Moors Railway runs between Pickering and Grosmont, it's a wonderful 18 mile trip through stunning scenery. Goathland is one of the stops on the line, so you could get off and have a walk around 'Aidensfield'.;)

    Enjoy your visit to Yorkshire

    Kind Regards

I agree about the suggestions of Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay. I live quite close and have spent many a happy day at both places. Whitby is alot larger in terms of places to wander around and restaurants etc, but Robin Hood's Bay is lovely and quiet and quaint! (Also VERY steep if anyone has any mobility problems/pushing prams etc). Parking is at the top of the village in a car park.
As for fish and chips in Whitby, I would recommend Magpies for sure, but I'm not so sure it would assist with money saving! You can eat in or take away. I believe take away for 2 was about £12 for fish and chips, peas and a drink (something like that!) They were devine though- we wanted to go there every day that we were there in April and have our annual fish and chips rolled into a week!

Oh yeah I can vouch for this one .......

Local folklore says they fry the fish and chips in beef fat !

NEVER ever EVER seen Cod as big as they serve at the Magpie

Its an east place to find, just look for the queue on the quayside
