Scarborough is really nice for a day out you can do the Sea Life Centre (loads of kids free and 2 for 1 vouchers are about at the moment) and visit the castle. It's also a nice place for a walk round.

If you go to Hornsea it has the Freeport outlet village and just near there at Skipsea is Mr Moo's ice cream parlour. The cows are kept outside and you can go and have a look at them.

Malton & Pickering aren't far away and Pickering has the Yorkshire Moors Railway.

If you are near Hull (Bridlington and Hornsea aren't far away) you could do the museums (all free) and visit the Deep.

Thornton le Dale between Pickering and Malton is also lovely.
  • I second everyone elses ideas.

Whitby is beautiful for a good day out. Must have fish and chips (it's law, you know!! lol Though there's always such a long queue that we've never got in.) There's a variety of shops so everyone has something to look at. There's the harbour, even trips on boats, walk to the castle (if you're very fit....gosh those steps kill your legs but worth the view.) I personally enjoy sitting on a bench and watching the world go by. Oh, and we've enjoyed going to the Trenchers restaurant. Plenty to see and do.

I also like Scarborough but haven't been for a while. Last time I went it was a typical seaside resort not that updated but I actually really enjoyed. I also used to love going to Bridlington for a change of scenery when I was a student in Hull. Very relaxed and a great walk along the promenade.

Robins Hood Bay is also beautiful but I would suggest that you need a confident driver to get you into the area. A bit steep in places but worth it. Last time I went I did a circular walk (just followed the signage) and the views were outstanding.

I too like Thornton-le-dale. Stopped en route and worth a walk around and you MUST do the Yorkshire Moors Railway. September should be great as the majority of children will have gone back to school. When I went on there was a family sitting nearby with 3 very small children who did not want to be quiet (very difficult I know with small children) so for me it spoiled the tranquility a little but well worth a trip. I also stopped off at Goathland, had a great pub lunch and did a beautiful walk. Tiring but great fun.

The Yorkshire coast is beautiful. I've also been to Staithes. Thought it was supposed to be beautiful but it was absolutely filthy with gull poo and we didn't stay long. Apparently the waters are also very poor. Failed the pollution levels or something if I remember correctly.

Oh, you will have an amazing time and there really is so much to do.

I live very close to Scarborough and it is absolutely heaving during the school holidays so I would definitely suggest Whitby over Scarborough. However if you do go, visit the Harbour Bar (Michael Winner's favourite!) on the seafront for old fashioned ice creams in an american diner setting, Mother Hubbards is great for fish and chips, the castle often has jousting contests.

This area is also part of The Dinosaur Coast - http://www.dinocoast.org.uk/sites.html.

The whole area from Scarborough to Pickering to Helmsley is a lovely drive - provided you don't get stuck behind tractors. Thornton-le-Dale has a great chocolate factory and is very pretty, Pickering has the steam railway which stops and traverses through Heartbeat country - the scenery is gorgeous - check the website for special events such as Thomas days. Helmsley has some fantasic pubs, a very pretty market square and Rievalux Abbey and Terrave & Temples are nearby. The terrace is great for kids and dogs as there is a half mile of grass with a view of the ruined abbey underneath.

York is also close by for a day trip which is lovely with the Minster, Bettys for tea (v. expensive tho!), the walk around the city walls and a Black Death cemetery.
