My son was 18 months when his sister was born.

He was soooo good with her, he would sit on the floor next to her in her seat and cradle her head and kiss it, bless him! She was HIS sister and he was the BIG brother, he loved that ~ pity they can't stand the sight of each other now lol!

He loved to help, bathtime (passing stuff to me and pouring water gently over baby), nappy change time (passing nappies to me and taking dirty ones to the bin etc), feeding time etc ~ and children, especially little ones, love to think they are being important and helping Mummy and Daddy!

He was never left out, everything one had, the other did too. Birthdays also, each would get a little token present for being such a good brother or sister to each other.

I still do that now and they are almost 14 and 12 lol!

We had another baby last year so we had no concerns or problems because of the huge age gap.

Perhaps the fact that you banned visitors contributed to the lack of baby gifts?! lol!

I wasn't best pleased with seeing the sort of general visitors you get after having a baby but wouldn't include my nearest and dearest friends and family in that.:)

I think it was more the fact people assumed I had everything as I had the other children. I just didn't feel up to playing hostess as I was quite ill.. especially after the little 3.

I don't do friends.. but my siblings and mother pretty much come and go as they please anyway.

I had gaps of 18-30 months so mine were all very little when the next came along and just by general inclusion noone felt pushed out.. however.. now they are teens/almost teens we get so much of the 'but you like them best' .. the answer to that is 'no I dislike you all the same!'
