Hi there,

Had to buy a new "used" car yesterday as my current one suddenly become less than money saving! being worth a £1000 and needing £1500 of work to get through next weeks MOT! This car I have had this car for 10 years.

Anyway I bought from a local car dealer who friends have bought from and are very reliable but they do not organise tax for the vehicle which has none at the moment.

I am due to pick up the car on thursday ( although it could be later if needed) I am phoning my insurance company later today to transfer cover for thursday and get a cover note sent out but I then suddenly realised two things.

The car will have MOT certificates and I wont have have the tax reminder that DVLA usually send out so what documents can I take to the post office prior to pick up of the vehicle with my cover note, do I need to borrow the latest MOT certificate from the dealer?

Also regarding insurance, I am due to pick up the car on thursday morning but I will still be driving my current car on Thursday up until I deliver that to where its going. I might not pick the car up until the afternoon.

Will the insurance company do an "overlap" where I am insured for both vehicles on that thursday? The old car should be going on thursday but I didnt really want an exact swap at say midnight wednesday night as then I wont be able to drive the old car to its new home as I will then be insured on my new one

Im sure both questions have obvious answers but having been out of the car buying market for over 10 years Im a little rusty!

Thanks

You need to take insurance doc, MOT and the new keeper slip of the V05(log book) to your nearest VRO centre, they will give you correct forms to fill in to get it taxed immediately.

Regards the insurance, your insurers should be able to delay cancellation of old policy for a day or two after.

if you give the money to the dealer, he could tax it for you. online?
afaik, you would then have to change the name on the reg book when it came back to you from DVLA swansea.
    Get some gorm.

Similar problem, spoke with my Inusrance when I was arranging the change over. I was changing the insurance for the Wednesday and they told me I was insured with current car right up to the time I picked up the replacement (tho I was doing p/x so in and out same place).

As long as you have the the New Keepers suppliment of the V5C, current MoT and Insurance policy/cover note then you can take it to the Post Office.

However, if there is a problem with the V5C or the vehicle is currently taxed 'Disabled' then you will have to go to a local DVLA.
    Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies, I swung past the garage this morning on the off chance they were open, the salesman gave me the new keeper slip and the current MOT.

I have just phoned direct line (after 40 minutes on hold!, lucky I used saynoto 0870)

They will only do a straight transfer over at a given time ( they would delay the old cover ending for a day but would charge me £20 for the priviledge!)

They are sending documents out 1st class tomorrow, and if I don't get them before Thursday I can call them ( hopefully not 40 minutes on hold!) and they will fax the detail to me at work.

Interestingly they tried to charge me £21 for changing the vehicles, as an administration charge, but when I pointed out the 40 minutes of my life I will never get back having been on hold, they decided to waive this fee.

And I get a £2.10 refund on my policy!
