  • Might be worth noting that some electricals in the U.S have a 12 month warranty on parts BUT only a 90 day warranty on labour unlike uk which has 12 months on both
  • I am going to Florida in September and I am looking to buy a digital slr.
Is there anything I need to know about the power supply as most cameras have rechargable battery packs

Hi guys, no one has mentioned bigger things, like property? or cars/boats?
Is it possible to book holidays from the US? surely this would be cheaper if going on a long trip. Even if you had to pay in £ to get to the US for your conecting flight?

I'd reccomend you buy a UK adapter when you get home. For sometihng like a good dSLR then I think you will still make a good saving. However you may want to hide the packaging or better still dispose of it, as customs are hot on shiney new cameras
  • While we are on the subject, does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can buy the $$$ for the best rate - and no commission??

We are going to the US at New Year, and would like to take advantage of the good ROE at the mo!!!

We always buy jeans and trainers, certain shampoos and car bits when we are there. Last visit bagged us 5 pairs of levis $117 dollars, 2 pairs nike trainers $48 and various bits and bobs on our travels!!!

Can somone clarify to position with the purchase of PC components from the US?
Are they liable for import duty, VAT, etc. or do you only pay for the international postage?

What rate of import duty would be is charged on PC components?

Duty rate on most PC (if not all) components is zero currently. VAT is payable - the taxes are based on the CIF price (cost insurance and freight) but thats usually declared on the package/envelope (little green sticker) -

be careful with bigger packages cos the freight (especially airfreight) can be high - usually based on wieght - DHL/Fedex will do the declaration for you or the post office will assess.

make sure you check specification of model you are going to buy that the included battery charger(if li-ion/ nimh battery) is 110-220v "travel" type, then you only have to use an adaptor to get you from the U.S. 2 pin it will have to our 3 pin

http://www.caiman.com are very good for DVDs and CDs. Excellent on some of the rarer and more obscure stuff-£6 delivere for one that I couldn't get cheaper than £24 here.
    How does this site work?

I'm looking for some childrens DVDs and when I find one I'm presented with what looks like a series of sellers? Assuming I buy more than one and they ship from different sellers am I not going to pay a fortune in shipping charges?

    edit
    Postage & Packing charges

Your P&P charges vary in accordance with the type of item and with the country to which it will be delivered.

Caiman delivers throughout the UK, Ireland, all of Europe and most of the World.
Below you will find a quick look at the P&P charges per item for an order placed on Amazon.co.uk

looks like it's just an affiliate of Amazon??

Here is something to note if you are visiting the USA and plan to come out here and blow a lot of money. I moved from the UK and now live here and didn't know how i should convert my savings. What i discovered was that there are two conversion rates the first being the tourist rate which you will get if you convert your pounds for hard currency at a travel agents or wherever. The second excahnge rate is the market exchange rate which is what a business doing X amount of business gets i.e. your bank. Is this making sense you can read more about it here:

    http://money.uk.msn.com/banking/exchangerates.aspx?vv=400&lc=1033

Basically i get the market exchange rate (The higher rate) because i use either my credit card (Nationwide of course) or my bank card to withdraw money because i am going through the bank. MSN quote both rates and there's normally not too much in it for just 1 pound to 1 dollar but if you put your whole trip on you card and pay it off or just withdraw the cash when you're here it can really add up to a few hundred extra dollars than you would've got by going and exchanging it at a travel agents. Plus you take out what you need and don't get ripped off changing it back over to pounds.

Point to note though Nationwide doesn't charge you for withdrawing cash but the atm you are using may do usually they will have a limit of $500 or something and the most i have been charged is $2 on one transaction so it's not too bad at all. The machine will always inform you of what the charge is on screen or on a sign around the machine.

Oh finally look at www.fatwallet.com it's similar to this site but based in the US.

Hope this Ex-pat saved some of his fellow countrymen so dollars...or is that pounds?

P.S for all you ebayers out there asking the seller to check the gift box on the shipping slip will save you paying duty on items bought from ebay sites from other countries.
