Great 'Buy now from the US' Hunt.

  • I bought 3 pairs of Converse through their store, which adds the postage and tax right there- you pay more for it than the shoes. Still it was £100, in ranges that aren't available here so not really comparable but had they been sold here would have been £150 approx, my guess. Also, bizarrely I know, we bought a pair of the ethical version, No Sweat boots from the US which worked out at £20 (more on postage than boots again!), no customs charge.
I can also reccommend http://www.cafepress.com/ (printed T shirts etc). When I bought from them several months ago the postage charge was $7, which makes it cheaper than from here most of the time! I do believe they've upped this recently though. Customer service was great when the item went astray too.

By the way if you are going to the US the best place to exchange your money is marks and spencers they are usually about 2 or 3 cents to the pound better than anywhere else and they do not charge commission.
The best place I've found is Travelex. This morning M&S is quoting $1.828 to the £ and travelex is quoting $1.8464 when ordered on line. They will arrange for you to collect your travellers cheques at the airport which is very convenient.

Just skimmed this so sorry if I repeat anyones post.

If you like playing games online you can download and play various games such as cake mania, jewel quest etc... you get a free 60 minute trial but then have to pay to keep the game. On www.zylom.com the cost of cake mania is £19.99 but on www.pogo.com the cost is $19.99

Big difference for exactly the same games!!

Gymboree does great kid's clothes, especially good for co-ordinated ranges (matching bags, hairclips ,socks etc). They're an American company which had a few shops over here but they closed down their UK operation 2 years ago. I was so upset I've been buying their stuff from the US website ever since then with no problems. I never buy anything full price as they discount each new range when it's been out a few weeks. I've never been charged tax by customs, presumably because it's kid's clothing.

Worth a look https://www.gymboree.com (sorry, no idea how to insert the link!)

  • Where can I get the exchange rate of of $1.90 to the £ ? I've been out today and all I found was £1.82.
I live in London, I travel on Thursday.

    Thanks:confused:
  • 1.9 will be the actual rate not the selling rate, read my post number 90 for how to get the best rate.
2p off is still 2p off!

  • Since the upgrade in security can anyone carry electronics through customs or do they have to go in the hold.
I don't fancy putting something brand new in an unlocked case.
