Adopting a Rescue Dog with a Young Child?

You could also enquire at your local council run pound as they may have some dogs available for rehoming.0

presumably though your parents don't have young children and that is why they were allowed to have their rescue dog. easy to say the dog came from a family home with kids and is brilliant with kids as you have to ask why is it a rescue dog
A dog is anything up to a twenty year commitment, which unfortunately some people do not plan for. Many people underestimate how much work a healthy puppy is, relationships break down, jobs are lost and finances become tight, owners obliged to move from a house to a flat, owners who went into a nursing home or died. You only have to read this board to see that many 'behavioural problems' are easily solved by going back to basics with training.
I have had three rescue cats - one given up when the owners got a puppy(!), one whose owners simply moved and left him, and Noah who was a stray on a rough estate. All three have been very loving and problem-free cats, I can only assume in all cases the novelty wore off. :mad:Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Well said, firefox - sadly, the assumption that recue dogs are 'bad' dogs or have something wrong with them is one reason why some people will never consider a rescue... when in fact they could be missing out on many wonderful, often 'ready trained' dogs who have been rehomed through no fault of their own. Presently, we have three rescue dogs in our family (my little mongrel, my mum's lurcher, and my dad's JRT) - all three of them came housetrained, which makes life so much easier; I know for certain my dad would never have coped with a widdly poopy puppy!
Rescue dogs are infact, often be a much easier option than a pup, and you also can see what you are getting with an adult dog, (both physically and temprement wise) to a far greater extent than you often do with a pup!0 -
Thank you FC - just the reason why we are going to see a rescue tomorrow! She's 5 years old but so much easier for all the reasons you stated before - her home circumstances have changed, she's a lovely dog from what I can see on the website and deserves a good, loving home where she can be looked after as she deserves.
Wish us luck for tomorrow (and the home check later in the week!):j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

Thank you - she was even nicer when we met her - I tried not to get too carried away because I don't want to build my hopes up too much - perhaps it's too soon after losing Clio but there is a definate dog-shaped hole in our lives now!
And she was rehomed with small children who didn't know how to treat her - so back on topic again!
I probably wouldn't have looked to rehome quite so soon, but when I posted about losing her, people were so kind, and someone posted the poem about dogs not leaving wills, but leaving their home etc to another rescue dog, which is whay got me looking again.
Oh well - no phone call yet!!!:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j
