Hi,

I would need some help with Internet at home.
I had Tiscali for nearly 3 years with Linksys and later on with Thomson router.
I have changed the ISP to Plusnet premium about 6 months ago and they sent me a router but as it was the same Thomson as I used with Tiscali I never actually changed it and gave it to my neighbour.
I have a 2 bedroom flat where 3 PCs, a laptop and PS3 are connected to the router. The problem I am experiencing is the speed of Internet in kids bedroom which is the furthest from the router , about 8m from actual router.
I tried to move the aerial of router, but the connection of PS3 is not good at all. Can someone help me - is it the actual make of the router which is not good, the distance from the router or the fact that it is Tiscali router and I am on Plusnet now? Do I need a different router or just some booster? My kids are frustrated when playing games online and I don't know how to solve the problem.
Thanks for advise you technical people.

i'd just run an ethernet cable from the router to the ps3. it will provide more bandwidth and you shouldn't have many issues while playing online.

i know you might not be able to run a cable from the ps3, but wireless signals can be affected by things such as microwaves, other wifi networks and the thickness of walls in the property.

I am not able to have a cable from router to PS3 as the router is connected to the main PC in sitting room and the kids bedroom is at the end of L-shaped flat; we have laminate flooring and cant see how the cable would go around the whole flat

I never heard of Homeplug, just googled it and found some on Amazon... So do I just plug it into the socket or how that works? And according what do I choose as it seems that there are many to choose from...

Wait a few minutes and someone will come up with suggestions, well ok more than a few mins, they are either  or sleeping through the leaders debate. I haven't had need to use one but will have a quick look at my Mags to see if there any recommendations. I would suggest at least 200Mbps (you will actually get about 50 but much better than wireless reallistically). You plug one near the router and a ethernet cable to the router then another one in the "Games Room" with ethernet too. Hopefully someone will pick up on this thread soon, whilst I go look out my Mags look for Homeplug on this forum using search.

Typical no recent magazines with useful reviews, however I have re-read the thread and it seems that you only want to use it for on-line games, so 85mbps plugs should do. Having now said this I see you have a 2 bed flat and the possibility that they may be getting interference from a neighbours router. It may be worthwhile 1st of all to see if there is any interference, so I would suggest you download inssider to one of the lappys and take it into their room, and also into the room with the router so see what the signal strengths are in each, and also which channels are being used. You can get inssider here it gives you graphs on relative strength, and a list of which routers are being picked up on which channel. This is free software, so is more MSE than homeplugs/dlan. Give it a try, if you have other routers than yours showing up on similar channels change the channel on your router. Someone here will help with that as I don't know much about your particular one , but could probably figure it out :)

Thank you so much. I have downloaded the Inssider and picked up other 17 routers around and when I took my laptop to kids bedroom, 2 of the other routers had stronger signal then ours. Now I will try to change the channel of my router but I will have to google that one.
But I am really impressed with all I have learnt tonight. Thanks a lot.

Channels 1,6,11 are the ones with less overlap, but If you can find 17 then it must be busy there :D, If you can screen shot the graph and post it via somewhere like photobucket that would help, if not sure then tell us which channel you are on, and which channels are being picked up, 12/13 are most likely favourites to use but some kit does not expand as far as that, nor do some routers.
Just post your channel and then each of the others in the order of strength in the games room. I know it means pen/paper then typing in but if you don't know how to use screen shot and photobucket / other picture web sites thats your best bit. Then we can work out which channel to use for best effect.

As it's Plusnet would it be anything to do with traffic shaping, they do shape products at different times of the day (except for Pro) table can be found here http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/plusnet_shaping.htm
