Just keep the fob on the same keyring as the other key and you'll be fine. A lot of people tape them to the ECU when they have to replace keys but I wouldn't recommend that for obvious reasons!

I got a new key made from a broken key I had. Worked perfectly but you could remove the key from the ignition with the engine still running!

    Hi
the newly cut key on the keyring with the fob and the broken key does start the car but almost immediatly it dies......gutted !
I have spoken to a diagnsotics chap on the phone who has advised me (if i need to do it as cheap as poss) to remove the steering column attach the fob , with a cable tie to the ignition barrel , i will lose the immobiliser but i need the car , like yesterday !!!

It might be that the fob needs to be closer to the ignition barrel, where the receiver is. Try holding the old key right up to the barrel and if it starts and stays started find a way to attach it? That should save pulling things to bits to find out it still doesnt work and could be another problem!

I was thinking of welding the end of the broken key to the new one , bit of a mess though ! and large ! wish i was minted , i`d just get it done

What does your fob look like? You can get blades on ebay cheap, then get your key cutter to cut to the required pattern, then plug your fob into the new blade?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-ASTRA-VECTRA-ZAFIRA-REMOTE-ALARM-KEY-FOB-BLADE_W0QQitemZ220444710021QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3353875485

I'm assuming they've just cut the key on to a standard (fobless) vauxhall key?

Yes , just cut the key out of metal with no fob , if i get the blade you posted the link to , Will that just slip on to the fob i have now ? (the fob i have now is fairly chunky SEE PIC)
?and will it not need any sort of coding ?

If that is your fob above you just need to find the correct blade that will slide on (not necessarily the one I posted) by checking for any numbering on either part of your key. No reprogramming necessary because you retain your original fob with the key. You can probably find instructions on how to take your key apart on the net, I found plenty when I had to pull apart my VW key to fit a new battery. One thing to note when you have it apart is dont leave the battery out, without power the fob could end up needing reprogrammed.

cheers mate , i will need to find instructions on how to dismantle it then because the key (whats left of it) and the fob look `unopenable` !

Dont worry my VW key was the same, it will come apart but look for the procedure because it may be easy to break if not done correctly :)
