in Credit cards
OMG! So many threads here, so little time to browse. Forgive me if this exists somewhere but I'm new to the forum but not MSE...
I've just received a call from a company called "Cancel Credit" who claim to be regulated by the Ministry of Justice (?) They tell me that they can write off my credit card debt because I've probably had balance increases without ever signing a new credit agreement....
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
I was very vague on the phone as i'm not about to hand out personal details - he must have got my number from one of these pesky databases  - but this guy's gonna phone me back next week but I can't help feeling it's all just a scam; their web site makes no mention of fees etc and there's just no way people are offering this service for nothing.
Someone please help this newbie!!!!

Yep its a scam.
Firms like this will ask you to pay an upfront fee (often £300 or £500) and basically do very little.
They cannot get your debt written off.
It could be that your debt is unenforceable in a court, this would be based on whether the consumer credit agreement contained all that it should. If you wanted to find this out you could do this yourself using info from this forum and for a few quid.
If your debt was unenforceable and you decided not to pay then this will have a big impact on your credit report and credit rating.
If you were to pay money to this company, or anyone offering similar you will be throwing away money you could better use elsewhere (to pay off the debts perhaps).

It is written into your credit agreement (that you agreed to) that your limit may be varied at any time.0

Cifpower i'll check out what i signed before this charlatan calls me back on Monday.

The trouble with the Internet is that it allows anonymity to anyone to say anything. You could be one of their competitors couldn´t you?
These people helped me and I have no problems with them??? I don´t feel like I have been scammed.0 -
You are so right johnjojohnson. People can use the cloak on anonymity to say anything. They could for example join a forum just to make their first post appear to be a happy customer of a company when in fact they actually represent that company.
Luckily most people understand thats how forums work and will take that into account when reading posts.
Also luckily on here people are not directed to any company offering to wipe out their debt, or any competitors, instead the law is explained to them so they can investigate the credit agreements themselves for free.
I'm sure you'll agree that on a money saving site that is a good thing to help people save their money from these companies.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Well for all of you out there if my post saves one person from being ripped off by these sharks then i dont really care what you think, in my opinon this is the true purpose of these forums. Do your own research.0

Wow I feel realy let down I was on the phone to a guy from this company for hours yesterday, £995(he wanted me to ask my family for this money and pay it through a credit card) was going to be the fee, he said he could wipe out nearly £20,000 of credit that i owe and he realy seemed genuine , i am shocked, I thought there was a light and the end of a very long tunnel and an end to paying hundreds of pounds of interest every month on credit cards that i cannot make no headway with, oh well i should have known better, wait till he rings me back, they should not be allowed to mess with peoples lives like that i am:mad::o actually incensed( and feel a bit of a mug too).:(0

At least you have found out now alily. He may seem helpful and caring when he calls back but all his is interested in is your £995.
