They haven't stolen anything! You bought a ring as whole, not a ring with separate diamonds. They couldn't resize it for you so they offered a new ring of an equivalent value, it doesn't matter that this one has fewer diamonds than the original. Either accept it or ask for a refund of the original purchase and go elsewhere.

So your saying if buy a ring, which has 18 diamonds in, keep it for over 3 months, take it in to be resized and get back a ring with 15 diamonds (which are the same size as the original ring) plus less platinum that that isnt stealing??? i do have a riung of less value now, it has less diamonds and less platinum. If i took in a necklace asked them to make the chain smaller i wouldn't expect them to keep the piece of chain they took out.

i'm pretty sure if you give a jeweller a piece of your jewellery you should receive back what you gave them in its entirety.

OP, well done for clearing 17 grand's worth of debt in one year! I can understand how every penny must seem precious to you... But in this case, I don't think you've been ripped off. I think the shop should have told you that the ring had been replaced rather than resized without you having to have prompted this response with your fevered diamond counting. But other than that, I can't see that they've done much wrong.

On two occasions you've admitted that you 'caused a bit of a stink'. On both occasions the shop staff have tried to accommodate you. If the shop can't guarantee that the rings are of equivalent value, or you don't like the new design, ask for a refund and go elsewhere. And stop ranting. ;)

i'm not ranting, the shop refused a refund. when i handed over the ring, they said it would be resized or re mouled. i wasn't told exchanged for a snother ring with less diamonds

That has like a billion stones in it, I can count more than 18 already... if it was like that the ring must have been super small *AND* they most likely would have said in the shop that it couldn't be resized.

it was like the ring above and when we bought the ring the lady said it could be re sized and to come back nearer the wedding, which is the only reason we bought it

this is why we are annoyed, we never would have bought that ring if we had known it couldnt be resized. why did they not just order a ring in my size in the first place.

Does the new ring have the same carat weight of diamonds as the previous ring? I should check that, because then you have the equivalent diamonds you are paying for.

no it doesnt have the same weight in carat of diamond or platinum :(

Well if that is the case (you should have gotten a certificate with it for the diamons originally, most good jewellers will provide this) then I would suggest you go and ask Consumer Direct for their advice. If you don't have what you've paid for you are within your right to chase it along.

Now, if you'd posted that at the beginning some of the other posters might have been able to offer you more help! Have to confess I thought it was all "much ado about nothing" at first, myself!

You do realise that any valuation/weight of stones measured whilst they're on the ring is only an estimate? 3 stones at less than .1 of a ct each are probably going to be worth v little - ask for a £50 discount and have done, or get a refund and go elsewhere.

I agree with jackieglasgow that it would have been better for you to tell us that you were missing a quarter carat (not an insubstantial amount, imho) of diamonds right at the beginning.
I too can't understand why the jeweller didn't offer to order a ring of the correct size in the first place.

However, you say you ARE missing .25 carat so I can understand why you're not happy.

    Just a quick calculation:
3 diamonds weigh .25 carat so they are 8 points each.
So the total diamond weight of your original ring was around 1.44 carat and is now less than 1 carat (.92).

Is this what you are saying?
Has the jeweller given you a new certificate stating that the ring you now have (15 diamonds) is only .92ct (ish)?

If you have this in your possession and also the original certificate, then I think it's not unreasonable to ask the jeweller for some of the money back that you've paid.

Have you put these facts to the jeweller in a calm, polite manner?

    I think you'll find 1.44 - .25 is actually 1.19...
