The Toshiba Satelites vent a lot from the underside of the laptop, so overheat far more quickly than a MacBook, which vents at the back.

Kids can insist they are doing things the way they are supposed to, but in reality are doing things completely different (like using laptops with vents totally block by duvets, etc).

It's getting that computers are compulsory for kids in school - I've already seen homework which is specifically 'go on x website' or 'find out online'. OK, sometimes a trip to the library can be managed, but certainly not if the homework is due in the next day and the library has a half day closing on Wednesday - the day the assignment has been issued.

It's completely essential once you get to post 16 - you will fail courses if you can't submit work electronically and work is only issued online rather than by post.

If this is unsuccessful in getting it fixed, I would suggest taking the matter up with Head Office, explaining that it has been faulty from the off and you want a refund.

BTW, Acer aren't particularly well made - failure is quite common with them, so they won't be able to tell you that you are the only person who has trouble with them.
Come on JoJo don't start a brand war! I've had the same Acer laptop running XP for the last 5 years now and with regular disk maintenance and a memory upgrade it is just as fast and reliable as my O/H's son's Sony VAIO running Windows 7!

To the OP Argos was the point of sale so regardless of Warranties, it is Argos who are responsible for faulty goods and should offer you a refund. Seek advice from CAB or Trading Standards. I had a similar problem with Argos and a Treadmill not being right, I called Customer Service and read them the riot act and got a full refund.
Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p
  • I wouldn't dream of starting a brand war, DCodd - I know my MacBook is head and shoulders above all my other Windoze laptops and PCs! :D

Acer have dropped their quality significantly in the last year or so, I especially noticed when getting the most recent laptop - the Acers looked and felt as though they were going to self destruct on the bus on the way home, and I have noticed a lot of 'my Acer has packed up' posts all over t'interweb.

But XP was, in my opinion, a more useful and economical OS than 7, which seems so unwieldy for something that could have been much more intuitive and efficient in action - they had enough time to at least try and get things right, but still, so much trouble involved from the moment of booting up to logging off. I think your upgraded laptop would still have the Dickens of a job dealing with 7.

If MS could have got it right rather than sort of OK for the marketing spiel, I would have been perfectly happy to say it was better - but, no, they couldn't possibly do that.

    ****

BTW, I was told I should give up my bedroom and sleep on the sofa to ensure that DD1 wasn't forced to share with her sister for GCSEs, but only when I pointed out that very few people in the school's catchment area had spare bedrooms and conservatories, which is where they had suggested siblings were moved to first. They assumed all the kids already had laptops.

On one of my current courses, it says in bold letters 'If you do not submit this work electronically, YOU WILL FAIL THIS COURSE'. Oh goody. On the other, it says of the final piece 'Whilst all other pieces must be submitted electronically, this piece MUST be in the form of two paper copies. Failure to do this will automatically disqualify you from achieving a pass'

    Confusing or what?
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
