Hi i recently brought my daughter an acer laptop from argos in the sale for £399,after about 8 weeks it started to cut out after about an hours use with a message appearing saying there was an error. It took 2 or 3 attempts to restart it.This happened then every time she used it,so she took it back to argos with receipt,to be told it would be sent away to be looked at.two weeks later it was returned with a note saying no fault could be found but if problem persists to reurn it.Within half an hour of switching it back on the same problem persisted so i went along with my daughter back to argos to ask for a replacement, only to be told no because the 30 day money back gaurentee had ran out and they would send it away again. If acer couldn,t find a problem the first time round how are they going to find it a second time?If it comes back saying they can,t find a fault what are my rights? The store manager was adament that it would not be exchanged and that there is a 3 year warranty on the product so it can always be sent away for repairs,in the meantime my daughter is without her laptop for studies every time they send it away for repairs that apparently can,t be found. It may come back this time saying they have found a fault and repaired it ,but i want to be ready to tell them what my rights are.

Are you using it on a desk, or on something like a bed? Beds and laps cause the machines to overheat and hence crash..0

using mainly on desktop but has been previosly using a friends in the same place for hours on end with no problems.0

write down what happens and how it happens on a bit of paper (maybe include the error message) and attach to the laptop. This might help the tech guys find out what the problem is.
Also you could check online to see if it is a common problem and take this info to argos.0 -
I know this is a bit OT, but I've never understood why people are suddenly unable to study without a computer...
When I was at school (I only left 9 years ago...) I used books, internet at the library, school computers after school if needed, and wrote everything by hand.
In college, studying a ICT, I still typed up most of my work at college if needed. Surely 2 weeks without a laptop won't destroy her life, because there's enough resources around to ensure she can still do work without a laptop.0 -
It makes you wonder what all those thousands of kids who can't afford their own computer have to do.I know this is a bit OT, but I've never understood why people are suddenly unable to study without a computer...

It is not the issue about studying that,s the problem thankyou anyway a lot of work has been stored on there and things have changed a lot since your days believe me!! I only wanted advice on my rights as a customer not a hovis sob story!!!0

Sounds like the laptop is overheating. One laptop not overheating in the location you're using it is no guarantee that another will not - after all they all have different specs in regard to motherboard, hard drive, ram, fans, space in the casing etc etc which all impact on heating.
The fault probably hasn't been picked up if Argos didn't make a note that it manifests itself after being switched on for some time - as someone else said, I'd add a note to the laptop casing.
To solve the problem of your child's work being stored on it, the easy solution is to buy a memory stick and dump it all on there.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

Probably user error - you're using it on a desk without a cooling pad causing it to overheat.
Buy a cooling pad.0
