It is not a choice, british air space is closed.

If the extraordinary circumstances don't apply for your flight on Monday then the compensation as detailed in the EC regs apply.

But it is looking likely that things will have reopened on monday when i was rebooked to fly after my cancellation today.

Do you have either a link to the regs or even better a bullet point breakdown of what i would be entitlted to?

As in my previous message where Media Travel say they are not responsible for Hotel Booking, I have been advised by Nationwide, my Debit card issuer to contact the Hotel and cancel the Acommodation myself which I have done. I have to ring Media Travel tomorrow and tell them. Nationwide says that Media Travel should have done this for me.

    why doesn't clause 14 apply?

    (14) As under the Montreal Convention, obligations on operating air carriers should be limited or excluded in cases where an event has been caused by extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Such circumstances may, in particular, occur in cases of political instability, meteorological conditions incompatible with the operation of the flight concerned, security risks, unexpected flight safety shortcomings and strikes that affect the operation of an operating air carrier.

This is NOT a clause of the Regulation and that has already been covered in this thread! It is just part of the preamble and has no legal meaning or effect! If you scroll down you will see the regulation starts where it says "Article 1".

That is ridiculous. The government listen to their safety advisors. However much inconvenience this causes, we would all rather be put out than not arrive in one piece.
It is not ridiculous, the cause of consumer losses is NOT an Act of God. PERIOD.

It is ridiculous that the media and others should give credence to any suggestion that anyone escapes liability on the basis that an Act of God has occurred. The airspace restrictions were not 'Acts of God'. They were acts of government and quasi government agencies, and now we have airlines making their own commercial decisions about what they will do. Therefore any compensation rights or insurance claims must be honoured according to the letter of other law. 'Act of God' is not a defence to any liability in this case and it should be discarded from all arguments.

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32004R0261:EN:HTML here is the Regulation. The actual text of it starts if you scroll down about 1/3 of the way.

Well first thing to do is be ready for what happens on monday, so be ready to print off a record of other aircraft take offs/landings from the airports that your flight was going to take at similar times. Airport websites may help so google them ready for monday.
