I used to drive from Milton Keynes to Bournemouth and back every fortnight in a 1litre Mini Mayfair. Whilst it wasn't the most enjoyable drive, the car never missed a beat.
I now drive a 3 litre 3 series and I must say, it's nice to be able to sit at 70mph and only at around 2000rpm instead of the 4500rpm in the mini. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
AVIS have been giving out Nissan Note's as Group C cars for a while now.
Group C used to be Focus/Mondeo/Vectra sized cars and were fine for the 500 mile round trip motorway stomp to attend a meeting.
Can't believe the Focus which is a small hatch was in the same class as a Mondeo or a Vectra which are much larger cars. If they are replacing Focuses with Notes then not too bad but Mondeos....thescouselander wrote: »Crikey! Those are extreamly small engines for a car the size of a Passat - I bet you have to thrash the engine a good bit to get it moving.
Yep forget looking solely at engine size you need to compare it along with power. The Skoda Octavia is running a 1.2l TSI engine- might be 1.2 but as others say they have turbochargers- similar to what diesel has being doing for years. As such it kicks out 105bhp, which is alright for the Octavia in my experience. My 1.6 diesel is more powerful than my old 1.9. Same all round- American cars are noted for having ridiculous cubic capacities compared to power.0 -

Just had a look at the website and the 1.4 TFSI engine in the Passat puts out 122 ps - not enough for a car of that size in my opinion. Even worse the 1.6 diesel only puts out 105 ps!0 -

Both options would be very s l o w...
150bhp minimum for decent progress on a car that size0 -

Try a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the speed, economy and overall comfort.
Sorry, had to pick up on that one, I've done more than my fair share of driving in one of those (mk4 V Reg) and its absolutly hateful for anything even resembling long distance - 70 mile journey and I was aching all over, interview done, returned home & I was ready to do a Basil Fawlty......
On the flip side, the N Reg (mk3) Fiesta I owned with its 1.3 HCS (60s designed) engine was an absolute breeze to drive to manchester and back in a dayProud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -

They will almost certainly only have 5 gears (meaning you will be sitting at around 3.5k - 4.5krpm in a petrol and 3 - 3.5k in a diesel, which will make you deaf). Plump for a 1.9/2.0 TDi if doing long distances or a 1.8 / 2.0 petrol, preferably with 6 gears to give a nice quiet cabin and good fuel economy
Mind you, my old BMW was 4,000 rpm at 80 indicated and did hours like that.Happy chappy0 -
