Obviously all of the above is only my "reserve" plan in case Johnny Depp doesn't whisk me away to a Caribbean Island for a secret ceremony before June 2012 :rotfl:

Another great thread! Haven't bought any wedding mags (yet) but already know:
    - no cars/coaches/donkeys/ chariots etc - exercise will do people good.
    - no proper BM dresses. Not even that bothered about BMs but OH insisted I have 1 and couldn't pick one out of 3 dearest friends. So 3 BMs (assuming they accept) dressed from the high street, don't even have to match.
    - no flower girls/page boys - better still - no kids. (Grumpus!)
    - no designer dress for me - unless I find a bargain at Bicester village or somewhere similar
    - no chair covers - unless the venue provide them (I'm getting married abroad)
    - no food choices except for [STRIKE]vegetables[/STRIKE], I mean, vegetarians.
    - no stuffiness
    - no formality
But hopefully lots of sun, fun, happiness and love!!!!
If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.

The best/worst thing about wedding mags is seeing what some people charge for stuff (example, white "antique" picture frame with a bit of red ribbon holding up playing cards - which were the tables in the table plan - for £650). Sometimes I think I'm in the wrong trade, I could have made that for less than a tenner!!!

Against my better judgement I ended up reading parts of a popular wedding magazine recently... Apparently we have to spend £30k on a wedding and it needs to be perfect in every details and of course, colour matched. I think these magazines are full of sh!te and want to know, which details are you missing out?

I'm not having a car, or flower girls/page boys, I might not even bother with a cake (and don't get me started on chair covers. !!!!!! is the point of those?!). I might get favours if they're cheap enough but i'm not too bothered. I haven't started to think about flowers yet but if I have to pick them from the garden and arrange them myself then it won't be the worst thing ever.

And it's not completely about moneysaving...we earn enough to have a decent-ish wedding... I just can't be arsed with it all. Is it really going to ruin my day if the bridesmaids' shoes aren't the right shade of blue? No! Will it kill me to do my own make up? I've got away with it every other day of my adult life without being heckled in the street!

Does anyone actually read these mags and think 'yes, I want to spend the equivalent of a deposit on a new house on a party'?

I think I love you, Fran.

  • I really agree here. When I was in the early stages of planning my wedding I bought these magazines and they scared me to death! Even the real life parts where they look like your average people, spending up to £30,000 on a wedding! That's double my annual wage at the mo! I suppose fair enough if you can afford it, don't want to sound bitter! :-s But I just think £300 a pop for BM dresses, £5 for each favour, it is all a bit ridiculous. I can understand forking out for a decent photographer, your own dress, and a nice venue if that's what you want but people go overboard. There was one recently who had flamethrowers, characturist, magaician, as well as a band and DJ... and she said she wished she'd had more! It scares me lol.

My problem is that i want just about everything i see. Ive managed to include most things i want and have got them at a much cheaper price than the magazines suggest, but the buget is still coming in at around £12k, which is alot more than i want to spend really. I just cant bare to think of going without something!!!

I must admit I've bought a few of these magazines for the ideas I like some of the ideas but for the price they have them at I'm not willing to have them I will try to find them at a cheaper price.

There is lots of things that I'm not going to have including mil2b and sil2b probably won't have the cars either.

No car as were staying night before, 4 of us in a suite for £90 including breakfast sure beats hell out for £300 for a 10 min car jouney!!

no chair covers, the venue chairs fit in nice with my colours so all will be well.

have haggled and shopped around for most things, ours is coming in about 8k but thats cause men have a family tartan and are buying the kilts! one kilt outfit is more than my dress!!

  • I have to admit to buying the magazines, but really cos I'm nosey and love the 'real weddings' sections!
    • We're not having bridesmaids,
    • having a buffet instead of a sit down wedding breakfast
    • Venue flowers will be out of the garden
    • No save the date cards
    • No chair covers
    • No definite 'theme' or colour scheme

    We're not having

    Chair covers,
    Drinks reception/canapes
    Hotel/country club/statley home venue
Not paying for guests overnight accomodation
    fresh flowers
    band
    make up artist
    honeymoon
no gift list or money requests
    magician/singing waiters/casino table

proberbly missed loads off, a friend of ours had an all singing all dancing £20,000 wedding last summer, it was a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed it but we want a much more informal, relaxed "us" day. She gave me a massive box full, with about 50 wedding mags in she was buying about 3 a month I flicked through most of them to get ideas of what i could 'borrow' and diy, then passed them on to another friend!
