Wedding mag 'must haves' you're going without

Against my better judgement I ended up reading parts of a popular wedding magazine recently... Apparently we have to spend £30k on a wedding and it needs to be perfect in every details and of course, colour matched. I think these magazines are full of sh!te and want to know, which details are you missing out?
I'm not having a car, or flower girls/page boys, I might not even bother with a cake (and don't get me started on chair covers. !!!!!! is the point of those?!). I might get favours if they're cheap enough but i'm not too bothered. I haven't started to think about flowers yet but if I have to pick them from the garden and arrange them myself then it won't be the worst thing ever.
And it's not completely about moneysaving...we earn enough to have a decent-ish wedding... I just can't be arsed with it all. Is it really going to ruin my day if the bridesmaids' shoes aren't the right shade of blue? No! Will it kill me to do my own make up? I've got away with it every other day of my adult life without being heckled in the street!
Does anyone actually read these mags and think 'yes, I want to spend the equivalent of a deposit on a new house on a party'?

Will probs skip on a car as our venue will be the same for the ceremony & party, so it seems pointless.
No flower girls / page boys.
Will get mates to DJ instead of paying.
Dress - I wanna spend £250 tops, so will be getting my dressmaker mate to help me there.
I won't be buying "proper" bridesmaids dresses; I don't like the look of them personally, plus they're overpriced IMO. Will get nice high street ones that the girls can wear again. Also, I'm banning "wedding" shoes - the girls can wear their own ones, rather than buying something that'll never be worn again.
Probs going casual on the suits, and have the groomsmen wearing their own suits, which'll fit properly, rather than hiring overworn bad-fitting morning suits. The boys can match their ties / shirts. A lot more relaxed, cheaper, but still as formal.
Flowers - I wont be decorating the aisle / dinner tables with flowers.
No filming - I have no desire to see a film of uncle clive picking his nose, or a close up of my boob during the ceremony!

No car as a friend is driving me the 1.5 miles, no chair covers, no pageboys / flower girls, no balloons, no table decs, no save the day magnets, no personalised expensive favours, no video, no string quartet, no harpist, no magician, no cheesy disco0

hi,
im not having cars roped in some mates.
not having waistcoats or cravats.
probably not having favours.
not having a pudding after the meal.
hoping not to have speeches.
im sure theres more but thats all i can think off. we have a budget of £2000 so there must be a lot were missing out on. lolgetting married may 29th 20100 -
Oh I forgot - my BM dresses were bought on sale at debenhams and my dress was only £200 :O
The no pudding idea i like - we're having the traditional 3 course sit down meal but if i DO get a cake, surely that would be enough?! I don't want to kill my guests!0 -
No special car hire, no flower arrangements, no proper wedding cake, no cravets/waistcoats/etc.
BM dresses i found £10 each in ASDA, and i love them, the BM's love them and they can be re worn.
No special make up or hair on the day. I can do it myself0 -
I was going to miss out the groom, but boringly, apparently I have to invite the grumpy git:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0

Ahhhh where shall I start....
My dress was £120 from Debenhams (& I get to wear it twice!)
No bridesmaids
No best man
No manicure/make-up/ hair being done (doing my own makeup & friend helping with my hair)
No sit down reception - we are having cocktails and canapes overlooking the bay of Naples and then a relaxed meal in the evening at our fav restaurant in Sorrento
No speeches
No photographer - just snaps taken by guests
No chair covers, doves, table decorations, flowers, goldfish bowls, sweet table, favours...blah blah blah
We are getting married in Italy with 12 close friends and family, with the sun shining and having an Italian themed party when we get back. I havent fretted or worried about anything, am not nervous and am so excited I could burst :j:smileyheaGot married in beautiful Sorrento 11th May 2010:smileyhea0 -
I haven't actually read any wedding mags so have no idea if I am 'missing' anything, but we set a budget and will try and get as much 'stuff' for our money as possible. Our aim has always been small wedding with close family followed by a big party!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0
