hi all ,

was thinking .... there are alot of people just starting out and learning all about gardens etc... and there are alot of people with loads of knowledge on this board ... i know we have threads asking loads of questions ... but thought it would be nice for people to have one where they ask a question and a kind person with the knowledge gives the answer ... kinda like what the old style board have ...

so here we go

  • I bought some awful Lidl compost last week all wood and twigs. I don't have a car so won't return it and it seems a waste to chuck it out. Once my compost bin has been delivered, would it be ok to put this into it in the hope it'll break down?

    Thanks

I am brand new and currently in need of a bit of help, posted on the newbie thread BUT the april thread dissappeared this morning :(

Yesterday i sowed salad leaves seeds - my first ever handling of pot - soil - seeds LOL!

I am currently in a flat and have no balcony or garden so have the small trough on a window sill and when no longer sunny i put it in a warmed room.

I am going to get one of the small greenhousey thingys when i move into a house in a few weeks but in the meantime should i carry on with what i`m doing?
Is there anything else i can do to help the seeds germinate?

I have been told by a friend they wont do anything unless they are in a sunny patio or in a greenhouse. I was led to think they were fine for windowsill or patio pots without a greenhouse.

they should do fine as long as the mix is not too exotic.
quite a few lettuces will survive through the winter, they are more hardy than people think.
I planted 3 types of lettuce outside on my allotment today,I will cover them with fleece if it gets really cold at night but other than that they will be fine.
Are you growing as baby leaves? or wanting larger lettuce?

I have looked on the seed pack and it says can be grown all year round on windowsills so i`m guessing it will be ok.
Salad leaves content include rocket victoria, muzuna, mustard (pizzo and red frills), greek cress and pok choi canton white sound exotic LOL!

Yes, I'd sieve out the good stuff and put the rest in a compost bin

Tell your friend that salad leaves actually prefer cooler temps, and they can bolt if too hot. In fact alot of salad leaves won't germinate at all if it is too warm. To help them germinate, the main thing is not to overwater and to check for slugs - even though it is indoors it only takes one chomping for one night to lose the lot.

    Thank you :)
I gave the soil a good soaking prior to sowing, i have since then been using a spray of water to keep the top moist once or twice a day.
    SO they should be ok.

Don't mist them with a spray; just wait until the soil is dry and give them a soaking again. They need just as much air in the soil as water. And they need the water at the bottom not the top!!!
