I am very confused!!
I have been with pipex trouble free for years. I moved house last week and informed them of my move. They said there was no BT line and only cable from previous owners, they would need to send an engineer at £88 to fit a BT line. I pointed out there are phone sockets in the house. After a week, still no dialling tone and no engineer, there is apparently a 'backlog' at BT.
The wierd thing is, i just switched on my laptop to work on something and here i am. Full broadband. The router is set with my pipex settings and so i am not accidentally using the previous residents broadband and i am definately connected to my router and no others.
So, am i missing something here? How can i get my broadband service when i supposedly do not have a BT line, do not have a dialling tone and Pipex say i am not connected.
Pipex said my broadband would follow 10 days after my phone, which has not been connected yet.
Asking on here, as calling pipex on 0870 numbers on my mobile will start costing soon!

You may not have a dialing tone but the broadband tie pairs could still be connected at the exchange BUT more likely you are picking up someone elses unsecure wireless internet.0

Checked and double checked. Definately connected to my router only. Used my blackberry to scan for networks- there are no unprotected ones here. still doesnt really explain how i apparently do not have a phone line, but i am connected to and using one! (although without dialling tone!)0 -

Have a look on saynoto0870.com there is a list of numbers other than 0870 you may be able to use to contact them. Worth adding that site to your favourites, can saves you £'s0 -

As spike said, the data side is still active, although the voice side remains unconnected. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
If you run a speed test from someone like www.speedtest.net it will tell you the name of the ISP0

I had similar with Pipex but I moved over 200 miles! Previous occupant never had ADSL but my Pipex details worked without a problem. I was definitely connecting via Pipex withmy log in. I can only assume that since it was a small exchange the linked all the phone lines to the DSLAM to save time. I must admit though that at the time I had a special ADSL account that was not linked to a specific radius server. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Just remember, I apparently do not have a bt line. They say prev owners were cable only and a new line needs to be fitted next week, yet I am plugged in and up and running with broadband. Def not neighbour, I have switched off wireless and used network cable to check. Hey, at the end of the day, I am getting BB when I thought I would be out of action for weeks. Just need a phone now. Apparently a 'backlog' at BT...0

Clearty BT's records are wrong and there is a BT line into the property. You know that yourself already, as you can see from the sockets whether they are BT or cable. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
