Luckily i have never had to claim from RM (or i have never bothered if the item has been just a couple of £) - don't they only offer compensation in postage stamps? Or is that old now? Even though it's got value i'd find it a pain in the bum.
I've only had to claim once in 9 years of ebaying, item sold for £20 and I got a cheque for £22ish from RM (item value + postage cost).

I never send anything recorded, when I worked FT having sellers insist on recorded (to the point of accusing you of being a scammer) for low value items was a pain in the bum as it meant having to pick items up from the sorting office. And yet, that one time is the only time anything has got lost in the post, and that was going to Italy who seem to have a lot of problems with their postal system. Not all buyers are out to get you. :)

I would never pay extra for anything to be posted recorded from Ebay, as stated above it is up to the seller to get the item to me, so I go for the cheapest option every time, unless I want it quickly of course.
Doesn't seem suspect to me at all, just a buyer not wanting to pay extra for something they do not need.

In my opinion, for safe selling on Ebay it helps to have detailed, well written and presented listings that make you appear an experienced ebayer and not an easy target for scammers or dishonest buyers.

I check the feedback of my buyer and, if it looks ok (as it usually does), I send inexpensive items by the cheapest method possible. I get a proof of postage in case of a claim for non receipt although to date I haven't had one of those.

If I suspect the buyer is dubious, I would probably pay extra for a tracked method but this hasn't happened to me more than once or twice in hundreds of sales.

I take the view that I save a lot of money by not bothering to send recorded, SD etc and, if I ever do get conned by a buyer, any loss will be far less than the savings I have accumulated.

For items of about £50 or more I usually send by a signed for courier service. Interparcel do this for about £8, and the buyer is paying for this so I am still not losing out.

I am not wanting the buyer to be out of pocket, but at the same time i dont see why i should be either when they stated they wanted it to be sent 1st class.

This is where you are wrong I'm afraid.

It doesn't matter what option the buyer chooses for postage, it's 100% entirely the seller's responsibility to make sure that they can prove the item has arrived at the seller's address, which usually means sending it tracked.

You won't be out of pocket. Just refund the buyer, then claim from the royal mail.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

This happened to me recently with a very large parcel, well done to Royal mail for losing it:D and there is no way round it except to refund and make a claim off Royal mail, I am waiting for my payment. There are a lot of sellers who put, I always obtain proof of postage which i will make available to buyers should they wish to make a claim. This is not the case, the sender has to make the claim. Paypal always sides with the buyer, except with proof of delivery.

    Agreed.

I never give postage options so there is nothing for the buyer to choose.

If I plan to post the item it is listed as:

    £x.xx Seller's Standard Rate

If I plan to courier the item it is:

    £x.xx Other 48 Hour Courier

Give the buyer an option and the smart buyer will always choose the cheapest option.

Avoid that by not giving them any options.

Add the extra 70p or whatever is costs and you are covered. If they are unwilling to pay that then they are not the customers you want.

I always ask if i can add the fee to have recorded delivery when buying. It goes in my favour then if they cannot supply one.

Recorded is an additional 74p, sellers can add it if they wish but unless it is include din the original postage quoted it doe snot have to be paid.

As for requesting it as a buyer, why? I think you need to understand how ebay and paypal work, any insurance (as has been said in several ways above) protects the seller only, the buyer is already protected by paypal.

Also recorded is pretty useless, it rarely shows online as delivered anymore so even using it will not prevent a paypal chargeback.

I dislike the "sellers standard rate" option. It tells the buyer nothing. I also disagree the smart buyer will always go for the cheapest option. I have a large amount of one item which is high postage if 1st class. I tell them in the listing as well as the postage bit they can wait an extra day or two for much less. Out of 100 sales, two people have gone the cheaper route.
