I have just been to 3 different banks because I cannot get to my own (I also have a disability) and need to bank a cheque urgently. At one time you could bank any cheque at any bank, then some started to charge, now it appears none of the takke others cheques. What happened to the "international banking system? Why are they allowed to get away with this? Why can't you pay (yes it was a rip off) to "speed a cheque through anymore?" We all know it's in their account straight away, its only us tha have to wait while they use it.

We ned a radical change here. Martin what can you advise us to do about this?

It sounds like you're trying to cash a cheque in a bank that you don't have an account with. Surely you don't expect this to be possible?

I stand corrected but I don't believe that cheques will be phased out by 2018 as it says in that article or even within our lifetime. There will always be people who struggle to get to grips with technology but will still need a way of paying for things like plumbers, window cleaners, etc. without hoarding lots of cash.

We may see a situation where banks don't automatically issue you with a cheque book or try to discourage people from having them but I think there will always be that option.

In Martin's absence, I'd advise you go to the bank manager and tell him "he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy".

Surely you can fill in the code of the account holding bank and your account number, as well as the correct name of the account.

You wouldn't need to in your own bank though as they would just use your paying in book. I believe the OP was trying to use a different bank entirely, so for instance pay a cheque into their Barclays account whilst in a Nat West bank.

That hasn't been possible for years.

Many years ago I worked in a bank and we always had people bringing in paying in books for other banks and we would refuse them and sometimes ask why they wanted to pay them in with us when their own bank was only 100 yards away. The usual answer was that our queues were shorter, or we were nearer the bus stop, so we would suggest they opened an account with us only to be told they couldn't posssibly as they really liked 'Barclays' or whatever.

It is possible as long as the paying in slip has all the details on it, eg sort code and account number, it is just banks do not want to do it. It is just the same as paying you HSBC credit card bill at Natwest. Natwest will not have a problem as long as you have an account with them, if not they will either refuse to do it or charge you for doing it.

Introuble28 is correct - the OP could have posted the cheque. I paid in a cheque at Barclays last week and mentioned to the teller that I hadn't been to the branch for years, and that I'd only gone in then because the cheque was so old and I was scared it would have been cancelled, lol! She said that I needn't have made a special journey, that I could have posted it to the branch with the paying-in slip and they'd have done it for me.
