Door to door charity fundraising...

  • Chuggers, and in particular those who are rude and insistent, also make it so much more difficult for unpaid volunteers of small charities to fundraise on the streets as some people tar us with the same brush. Whenever I take part in street or store collections for the charity for which I volunteer, we must usually abide by very strict rules which don't allow us to approach people, start talking to them, rattle our collection tins or even move beyond a certain demarcated area. I think that chuggers should be similarly regulated.

All we do is stand there and smile at passersby in the hope that they will approach us. We're more than happy to talk about our work if people ask us and are interested to know more, and are very grateful for any donations that people wish to give. We don't have any minimum donation amounts - a single penny is better than nothing! We also try to make our overheads as low as possible (no expensive offices and no paid staff) so that the maximum amount of money goes to those in need.

I've had awful experiences with chuggers out on the street and at my door, like many others on this thread. The sooner they're properly regulated, the better!
  • Sorry to bump this 2 month old thread, but just wanted to say:

Just had a RSPCA doorstep chugger knock on my door (I've got an MSE No Cold Callers sign on it), so I opened the door and as soon I saw who he was from and he said "hello mate", I just pointed silently at my sign and closed the door.
  • I loathe being harrassed in my own home, my dogs hate me being harassed too and bark if they spot a stranger on our property, if I spot a chugger coming up the drive I take a dog out with me. They're actually quite nice dogs but of a size to put the average chugger/salesman/canvasser off approaching. :)
The only time I really did get cross was in Manchester. My friend had recently returned from serving in Afganistan and her skin was wrecked from exposure. We spent the morning in Selfridges with her buying a few bits and bobs and some heavy duty moisturiser. As we left a chugger approached, we told him no thanks, he leaned right into her face and told her he hoped she enjoyed her shopping and she should think about charity next time she spent on a fake tan. We didn't correct him, probably should have but coming from a town with polite chuggers we were a bit shocked. :(

Reminds me of not so long ago when a chugger from the red cross knocked at the door. After asking if I was over 18 (yes I'm 26), he started talking to me like I had said I was 6 not 26.

My OH had a similar thing, some charity collector came to the door, my OH answered and the kid (he couldn't have been older than about 16) asked my partner if his 'Mummy or Daddy were home'....My partner is 22 :rotfl:

In our new house we don't get too many knocking on the doors but in town you get absolutely swarmed, there's normally at least groups of 3 different charities on a daily basis, normally those who start waving frantically and jumping in front of you to stop your path. I had one shouting at me from down the street the other day just because I ignored him.....

A recent chugger at the door was flabberghasted to learn that he was the third from the same charity that week. Apparently they were all told that they had exclusive areas.

    The biter bit.

I've often found street chuggers to be unpleasantly aggressive. I'm looking forward to arresting one real soon.

:eek: I would have apologized to him for his facial features, before rearranging it for him. He should be careful, most of us Mancunians can be quite aggressive if insulted, that could have just as easily been my OH with me lagging slightly behind (as I do in town). The final result does not bare thinking about.

  • To tsephen and all other chuggers

I have had several of these chuggers knock my door of late and despite the charity, the conversation always follows the same line.

I tell them that at present Im not in a postition to support any charity financially. They then tell me they are not collecting money and want to make people more aware of the work they do. I then get a rushed explanation of the worthwhile work of the charity, interspersed with statements such as "Do you agree that it would be wonderful if we could put an end to the suffering of children with various diseases and or fluffy bunnies?" When you agree, their response is "Im glad you agree" and then they go for the kill. They ALWAYS tell me how wonderfully generous ALL my neighbours have been. They ALWAYS break down the required donation into a daily amount. After all, 27p a day doesn't sound much does it? However £8 a month is a lot harder to swallow.

At this point I say "You told me you weren't going to ask me for any money" They respond by twisting their earlier untruth and saying they arent allowed to ask for cash donations at the door but that I can sign up quickly and easily by DD. My response "Yes but youre still asking me for money and Ive already told you Im not in a position to give, besides I don't want to give out my personal details at the door. The cheeky git then has the audacity to say "well its no more information that you'd give out if you wrote a cheque" HELLO you are missing the point. I DO NOT want to give you ANY of my personal details. I then get reminded once again of how generous all my neighbours have been and to think of the poor children/bunnies that could be saved by my 27p a day.

Now I don't mind if people want to do door to door collections for charity. However, if the person responds by saying they are not interested, how about these chuggers do something really innovative and respect the rights of the person whose property they are on, thank them for their time and go somewhere else. After all, if all my neighbours have been as generous as they always tell me they have been, they don't really need my donation do they?
  • Sorry to rattle on, but another thing that bugs me is all the oney these charities waste.

My Dad supports the PDSA, Dogs Trust and other animal charities. He is forever getting pointless crap sent to him in the mail. Aside from the glossy brochures beggingg him to increase his already generous donations he is always getting sent crappy pens, fridge magnets, key rings etc. Add to this the postage costs and the charity must waste thousands of pounds of donations on this. It really gets my goat that they are wasting the money my Dad and others generously donate trying to guilt trip people into giving more.
