As for the curtains and carpets - they aren't something I measure and weigh regularly. Wallpaper? Don't have it in my house so couldn't possibly comment. Think you are being just a wee bit pedantic there Student 100.
Of course businesses will find this easier to cope with as they are dealing with larger volumes of mail than your average household.
The point I was making is that your average housewife, pensioner, stay-at-home person can't just stick a first class stamp on a birthday card and know that it will get there on time. For example, birthday cards with badges on will not pass through the smaller slot (even though the size of the card fits in the "small letter" band) and so the cost is automatically more expensive. Why should it be so hard just to send a birthday card?
Damn, keep accidently pressing "thanks" instead of "quote". Sorry, I didn't mean to thank you for this post.
Student100 or whatever his/her name is is not being pedantic at all IMO, s/he is bang on!
You've never been able to just stick a stamp on. You've always needed to know what weight band the item falls into by weighing it (yes, I know that ,most of us just guess, but you see my point, surely!) so now, instead of just weighing it, you will have to check the sizes which should take...oh, an extra 30 seconds or so.0 -

No probs re the "thanks". Would disagree with you on your point though ukmonkey. Unless you are buying a large-ish birthday card or one with lots of stuck-on decoration, the weight is most likely to fall within the 60g postage range so a first class stamp was more than adequate. Now we have to keep the new chart and size chart to hand whenever we want to post a birthday card and/or queue up in the post office to buy the right postage. Not exactly an extra 30 seconds, wouldn't you agree?"Bad planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part."

I disagree. You already know that if it has a badge on it will be slightly more (it will fall into the lowest weight band on large letters), if its "bigger than normal" then it'll be a large letter and again, will be the lowest weight band in the LL category.
To start with it will confuse, but after a while people will be familiar with what's what and will know, in most cases, straight away what category an item falls into.0 -
My guess is as good as yours, sorry!ayla261 wrote:.......forgive me as am only a humble :A householder, i've no idea where on earth i would start to look for 'stamp dealers'? i tried the above link already but it just gave me a blank email...do i just email that i'd like a quote on how much they would charge for bulk?
Consider eBay as well - I did a search & found about 25 items. Click on this link: http://stamps.search-desc.ebay.co.uk/unused-1st-2nd-unfranked-victoria-1984-1987-1985-pc-96-day-qv-kilograms-commemorative_Great-Britain_W0QQcatrefZC5QQfbdZ1QQfclZ3QQflocZ1QQfposZOX118HQ5AQQfromZR14QQfrppZ50QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfssZ0QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQftsZ2QQga10244Z10425QQnojsprZyQQpfidZ0QQsaaffZafdefaultQQsacatZ3499QQsacqyopZgeQQsacurZ0QQsadisZ200QQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ0QQsaslopZ1QQsasltZ2QQsatitleZunusedQ20Q281stQ2cQ202ndQ2cQ20unfrankedQ29Q20Q2dvictoriaQ20Q2d1984Q20Q2d1987Q20Q2d1985Q20Q2dpcQ20Q2d96Q20Q2ddayQ20Q2dqvQ20Q2dkilogramsQ20Q2dcommemorativeQQsofocusZbsQQsorefinesearchZ1 - narrowed it down as much as possible

Never apologise for thanking someone.Just off the border of your waking mind, there lies another time ....0 -
student100 wrote:Without wishing to get into an argument, "common sense" can also tell me how big a letter is.
Small and thin - normal stamp.
Bigger than an C5 envelope or thicker than a pencil, and the same size or smaller than a C4 envelope - Large Letter stamp.
Bigger than that and/or quite heavy - take to post office.
There... not that difficult is it.
I think you are being just a little bit rude to anniebooklover.Just off the border of your waking mind, there lies another time ....0 -
I did a test run on some of my ebay items with the help of my lovely post office lady, and it is going to make a difference for me. One line I carry is light and even when packed in a small jiffy envelope currently goes for 49p 1st class. However, it is just over 5mm thick and doesn't go through the slot in the post office gauge without a lot of help , so in future that is going to cost me £1.
I may have to find something heavier to sell so that I get my money's worth :jI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Use the post office "SmartStamp" scheme to frank mail at home, I believe there is a saving to be had for the scheme but only pays off if sending enough letters.
