  • I have a few of the Euro stamps worth €1 which I assumed covered a letter to Europe but I cant find any information on the Royal Mail site. Does anybody know what they can be used for?

I hate royal mail...what last week cost 70p to send, today cost £1.39, not happy especially as the postmaster lectured me that it was definately going to be a cheaper way of posting things yeah right

I had a similar experience today, but the Post Office woman had the good grace to be appalled that it was costing me double what it would have

  • was gonna buy £46 worth of 2nd class stamps for £23 for my eBay parcel but I figured out I would need 52 stamps to cover one of my parcels, which would leave no space for the address!
Am looking at higher value stamps now but there are not as many.

The € isn't legal tender in the UK yet. Those stamps of yours must have been purchased in another country, so, obviously, aren't valid.

I know someone who crosses out the address on received letters and put xmas cards in the old envelope. He writes on the envelope "No longer at the Address. Try 'NEW ADDRESS'" and sure enough the card arrives at the new address he's wriiten on the envelope with no charge! All his mates know the trick and think it's funny. I think this is really naughty and wouldn't do it myself!

Not true, quite a few €1 or E stamps have been issued here, many modern commemorative sets include them and they have been issued in booklets. Unfortunately the Post Office dont make it clear what they can be used for.

I don't know anything about stamps in euros but the E stamps which are often included in the pictorial sets have a value equivalent to the basic rate of sending a letter to Europe which was 44p last time I checked. Like stamps that say 1st or 2nd class you can use E stamps as part postage on other items and as this is the cost of a large letter up to 100g sent 1st class I think it will be quite useful.

fact is, for the past however-many-years you've been costing Royal Mail money. Whatever you have been posting has cost them much more than 70p to send. Now they are redressing the balance and charging a fair amount.

Just think of it as the world's longest ever "low rate introductory offer" which has now run out.

(Why should those who post things efficiently i.e. in small flat machine-readable envelopes have to pay to subsidise those who can't be bothered and/or wish to post difficult-to-handle things like large packets?)

    I've been Money Tipped!
try cutting the cost on your packaging too, ALWAYS reuse padded envalopes, pinch packing mattierials from works etc, I work in a shop and we recieve big posters weekly (6ft)that are wrapped in thick good quality brown paper i just carefully cut it off, my boss is happy it's being reused!

you are having a laugh i presume because that can't be a serious comment
Royal Mail provides a service and refuses to allow competitiors to develop on a large scale meaning customers have no choice of how they send items, also do you really think that if the majority of post sent in the past was not netting them a large profit the system would have stayed in placeas long as it has?! And as for "those who can't be bothered2 to post things in small envelopes...maybe some of us use the cheaper/faster/reliable service of email or fax for small items like that and only use royal mail for bulky items as there is no viable alternative
This time next year Rodney... :D
