MY mum used to tell us that when we were small. She even used to say if the stamp is on wonkily its wrong too.Posted by Diminutive
It is actually classed as treason to deface anything officially bearing the queens face (which includes stamps). This actually includes putting the stamp upside down0 -

Here you can order up to 3 postage size guides for FREE so you can check your mail before you post.

I had to sign up, after reading that lot!
Diminutive is right in what he/she says; the machine reads the stamp, therefore any tape would shield it; the type of fixing is irrelevant; it is still against regulations to deface or wrongly position the stamp; it used to be cheaper to leave packets unsealed, and they would still go first class; (BT used to give cheap rate on phone calls on Bank Holidays); one used to be able to rely on the rapidity of first class, and differentiate between it and second class speeds; junk mail used to be delivered by freelance "posters", now the Postman puts more junk mail in my letter-box, without stamps.
I return junk/unsolicited mail to the sender - I understand they have to pay Royal Mail; I return to the pillar-box any junk delivered by the postie; don't start telling me about costs.
By the way, UKmonkey, what do you advise on then? 'cos it's not the post!
The site is great, the Newsletter is valuable, and good luck to all.
By the way, all addresses will receive the "size guide" and it is available at Post Offices.0 -
Buy books of 1st or 2nd class stamps in bulk (that is what the bulk suppliers do). Even when the price of postage goes up you can still use the stamps as 1st or 2nd class (even years later) - or sell them at a profit on ebay!!!0

It will be interesting to see how the 5mm thick limit is interpreted. If you fold 10 or so A4 sheets in half they will push out the envelope to more than 5mm where they are folded. You can squeeze it back below 5mm of course but it springs out again when released.0 -

They will only be usable for letter sizes tho, not the new large letter and packet sizes.
There isn't any price rise in this change, theres an increase up to 100g for a first class stamped letter as well from 60g.
Remember also I believe there is a two week grace period over which nothing will be surcharged on the new system after PIP is brought in.0 -
Here's a tip - the envelopes we all refer to as A4 are longer than actual A4 and fall outside of the letter rate, meaning it would be treated as a small packet. NOT so if you fold the top of the envelope down to the A4 contents and sellotape it down.
By the way 'ukmonkey', although I agree fraud should be discouraged, the ridiculous way these new price structures work only serves to defraud us consumers of our hard-earned. Congratulations to the overpaid consultant in Royal Mail who worked out how much more they could rake in if they put common A4 envelopes in the small packet category!!:money: Dedicated disciple of MoneySavingExpert.com and Savvy MoneySaver :A

only oversize A4 and foolscap envelope would be put in the packet category.
Normal A4 envelopes will be large letters.0 -
I used to reuse the large A4 envlopes that came in the post by sticking a white label over the address and stamp. I have been trying to use them all up this week because most of them would become small packets next week.
We cant put envelopes into the paper recycling bin here, they have to go with the cardboard for recycling. Still seems a bit of a waste, having to recycle envlopes I could previously reuse
