Kelinik wrote:OK went shopping and spent ages looking at gravy (as you do!:D ) and have ditched instant in favour of gravy powder. The thing is this still contains MSG so is there anything better that I'm missing?
Also I've found out (although it seems obvious now!) that my Paxo stuffing contains the hydrogented (sp?) veg oils which I'm gutted by as a roast just isn't a roast in this house without sage and onion Paxo! Any suggestions?
Kellinik, I make my own gravy, never buy powder, granules etc etc.
Fat from the pan, salt, flour and vegetable water, really yummy!
doddsyWe must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

Mix breadcrumbs, onion, sage, salt and pepper, any other seasoning you like (I like mace) plus a beaten egg.0 -
Thanks for the replies. Tbh I was looking for a gravy recipe that didn't need fat as alot of the meals we have gravy with don't have roasted meat. I've always used the veg water to make instant anyway as I don't have a steamer and don't want to pour the veggie goodness down the drain, but I'm guessing just this and flour would be pretty awful so would adding just a kallo cube to this work?
Thriftlady could I be a right pain and ask for rough quantities for the stuffing please? Never quite sure about judging it myself the first time I make something new.:heart2: Mumma to DD 13yrs, DD 11yrs & DS 3 yrs. :heart2:0 -

theres another good reason to avoid using palm oilDemand for palm oil is rising and is expected to climb further, particularly for use in biodiesel. Biodiesel is promoted as a form of renewable energy that greatly reduces net emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and therefore its use is being touted as a way to decrease the impact of the greenhouse effect and also the possibility of peak oil.
However, there is increasing concern from environmental and other NGOs about the social and environmental impacts of the palm oil industry. It is said that rainforests are being cleared to make room for the plantations, thus reducing the habitat for some threatened species, such as the orangutan (on Borneo and Sumatra). The plantations are often run by agribusiness, and locals in places such as West Papua and Kalimantan are missing out on jobs to migrant workers. However most of the rainforest is actually cleared for tropical wood production, sometimes illegal. There is far more forest cleared that ever necessary for palm oil production.
Orangutan experts around the world have unified to recognise that continued development of the palm oil sector, if done unsustainably, is the single greatest threat to the future of orangutans in the wild. The best professional estimates state that if the industry is not regulated then within 12 years we may witness the disappearance of orangutans from the wild. Other species that are critically threatened by disappearance of the forests include the Sumatran tiger and rhinoceros.

I've switched to Kallo organic cubes now but am finding them a bit flavourless if I'm honest?:heart2: Mumma to DD 13yrs, DD 11yrs & DS 3 yrs. :heart2:0

For a soup I use 3 in a pint and a half of stock. I like the flavours strong though. I think well thats 30p for stock, and 50p for veg = 6 potions soup, not bad considering.
I thought the kallo low salt ones are a biut stronger than the normal kallo veg ones IYSWIM i got those in waitrose. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

According to this guy, yeast extract (found in almost ALL stockcubes/granules, even Marigold and Kallo) is also a no-no.
