  • I thought this as well, especially when I checked out my old standby, Tesco Value Noodles. Although the ingredients only list vegetable oil as the fat, the guidelines on the front of the new style package say that each pack contaings 50% of your daily allowance of saturated fat. (If I knew how to do one of those 'horrified' smileys I would put one in now!)

Aye aye, I thought, someone's not declaring their hydrogenated fats. But then I found this on the government Food Standards Agency website:

'Trans fats can be formed when liquid vegetable oils are turned into solid fats through the process of hydrogenation. Foods containing hydrogenated vegetable oil, WHICH MUST BE LISTED IN THE INGREDIENTS LIST ON THE LABEL, might also contain trans fats.'

...So I guess the saturated vegetable fat must be palm oil or something.

I find it hard to believe that there is so much saturated fat in one serving of noodles...also really depressing.

    (I've got one!!)

And what about hydrolysed vegetable protein - what on earth is that?
    It definitely doesn't sound good.
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
  • Just bought some (what I thought would be a healthy snack) blueberry dusted yogurt coated raisins from julian Graves.
Have eaten the whole packet and then read this thread.
Looked at the ingredients list.....hydrogenated oil is the third listed ingredient!!!
    I now feel sick!!!
When life throws you lemons...put them in a gin and tonic !!

Yes you're right, palm oil is one of the few vegetable oils high in saturated fats. It's in a lot of processed foods as it is cheap.

Its a protein broken down into amino acids and used as a flavouring.

Found in a lot of soups and processed meats.

    ermm yummy??:rotfl:
  • The main reasons for using these hydrogenated veg fats are:

    1) Cost &
    2) Shelf life -I did not spot this one on earlier replies.
    Nice to save.

OK went shopping and spent ages looking at gravy (as you do!:D ) and have ditched instant in favour of gravy powder. The thing is this still contains MSG so is there anything better that I'm missing?

Also I've found out (although it seems obvious now!) that my Paxo stuffing contains the hydrogented (sp?) veg oils which I'm gutted by as a roast just isn't a roast in this house without sage and onion Paxo! Any suggestions?

OK Kelinik, I'm glad I'm not the only one who reads the gravy labels. I've read most of the supermarket brands of granules and they all contain HVF but oxo doesn't, the granules, not cubes. But I've just read it again and it's got mse in it and also something called bonestock! I thought bones weren't allowed anymore since the bse thing? Also, I seem to get lumps with oxo, but not with the cheapie own brands with HVO. Can't win! btw, M&S cappucino contains HVF, but otherwise they seem to have made a good effort.

Kallo cubes, Comptons Gravy salt and flour makes nice gravy and hasn't any MSG or HF.

hi There, Kallo cubes are available in most supermarkets - they do regular and organic and both come in beef chicken and veg varieties. TBH I get the non organic as they still don't have any nasties in them and they are comparable in price to Knorr stock cubes. Comptons gravy salt is available in Tescos and you can get it in lots of little shops and some butchers. It is a block of hard caramel stuff and you just break a little bit off and dissolve it in with the stock when you are making the gravy and it makes it all lovely and brown, plus it gives it a nice taste.
