and milk is naturally a solid?

P.S. I only ever use "Pure" margarine

Well, butter is made from cream which of course is a natural part of milk. Jersey cream is so thick you can stand your spoon up in it. And butter is made just by churning cream, which you can do in a jar with your own arms;) Even nice, HVO free spreads are a much, much more processed product than butter.

I suppose the best thing if you aren't vegan is to use butter, but only a little.

    Have a look at this

Wow, interesting link! (However, it may be slightly biased as it's by the butter board?) Still, as I've said already, give me a (more) natural product any day.

I discovered that Willow butter -like spread, which is solid like stork pastry margarine, is 'virtually trans-fat free',it says on the packet. Very good for making pastry and is sold in Somerfield for 99p for 2 blocks (500 g in total).

You may well be right - but then they have to fight against the millions spent on advertising the "benefits" of so-called healthy spreads. I hate them all - yeugghhh. I only ever use butter. The difficulty is in finding one with no salt added - not that I'm paranoid about salt levels either, but for some dishes/recipes I need unsalted butter. I tend to use the President butter - from Normandy  (I normally buy local first and then British products). Just wish a local or British producer made something even close :(

I agree with you totally about spreads, in fact I find I agree with you on pretty much everything- I buy local first then British too:)

It's difficult if you're checking online, as some products have updated their ingredients.

Quick scan of cupboards has found the following contain HVO's

    Bisto gravy granules (second ingredient)
    Cadbury's highlights instant chocolate drink
    Southern style quorn burgers
    Bachelors beanfeast
  • Bisto onion gravy granuals!

    Now in the bin.

I NEVER use gravy granules of any kind - they are full of rubbish. I also avoid oxo's and all stock cubes except Kallo. It is so easy to make gravy with a stock cube and a bit of gravy salt and thickened with cornflour, or if we are having roast meat I use the juices mixed with a bit of flour and then add hot stock and a bit of gravy salt. I thicken stews and stuff by reducing them wherever possible, or if not I use a bit of flour and butter mixed together, which dissolves in the hot liquid and thickens it.
