lol. Well I'm 25, have been working since 16 and paying tax. Also did some further education but not much. I'm also self employed now aswell as employed, so pay 2 lots lots of class 2 NI and then class 4 NI. Should be living like royalty will I'm old!
Anyway, thought the thing about chasing lost NI and income tax when you haven't claimed the dole was pretty well known. My dad did warn me at the time as the same happened to him, but thought 'nahh, times have changed'. Silly me! It has also led to me having a mark next to my name I'm sure as I've had to produce all my stuff for self assesment twice now, sure they think I'm ripping them off.
So basically, they are spending our tax money, getting someone to investigate me, who's over paid (because of the non employment thing) and actively pays on time and fills in self assesment! They don't find anything and I'm more than happy to hand them over reams of invoices!
I have just bought my first property. Been tough getting there and am now going to have to add to a bit more debt to get a cooker, only thing left that I need.
To get you lot wound up a bit further....have you seen the latest news on the plans, or at least what the MP's want to do with car tax and stuff?
It was announced this morning on the news. Car tax bands to go up in incriments of £300, the lowest level being £300, up to £1800 (to tax your car per year!!!). Also, increased duty on fuel (fuel tax esculator) and lowering speed limits and apparently rigourously enforcing them.
Joy upon joy! Lowering speed limits would mean at max 60mph on the motorway....one way to increase deaths due to falling asleep at the wheel!
These are just plans and certain MP's trying to push them through. Can't see it happening personally. My car, a diesel, doing 55mpg is in 3rd to last bracket, so that would mean paying £1200 for a piece of paper to stick in the window! No thanks, I'd have to give up work at that stage, wouldn't be worth it!0 -

Have you heard the latest - the government taking the 'charity cash' from the national lottery fund to put into the NHS? This cash was meant for charities - do we not give them enough money already to fuel the NHS?
And all this war on iraq nonsense with the government trying to tell us they are trying to help the people of Iraq - that's all very well and good but why don't they try helping the people of Britain first!!! How much have they spent on this war exactly? How much of the tax payers money goes to keeping the royal family?
I sometimes consider quitting work and going on the dole, just to try and claim back some of the tax I've paid!
Pobby, I wish every citizen in the uk was like you and your wife. I wish young girls could find more to aspire to than simply getting a council house, I wish people who earned stupid amounts of money (footballers for example) had to pay stupidly high rates of tax, I wish life meant life when people go to prison, I wish prisons were prisons and not holiday camps, I could go on...
To the above poster thankyou for the compliments.I have been thinking and a couple of things have crossed my mind.I am in my late 50`s and by and large the way we were brought up then was very different to now.Born at the time of rationing, there was not a lot of money about but there was a good community spirit. As kids,if a nieghbour caught you into mischief ya Dad was told and you would be in trouble. Many of us went Sunday school and at an early age you had some form of moral grounding.
Schools by and large were very strict, corporal punishment was the norm.I cannot condone that but
!I think we had more positive role models not the trash kids have today.Jordan, how talented is she!!!!!!!!!!
Also growing up in the 50`s and 60`s,we were in a period where the economy was growing. Not to the point where you would borrow loads of dosh to buy a car but it was possible to save for one.Jobs were plentiful, yes, then we spoke about jobs for life.Unlike today where boom follows bust. Some folks get very rich out of this while others collapse in a mountain of debt and job losses.
So many people I know now are using anti depressants which in my book equates to unhappiness. The young kids in my family are very materialistic and in debt as soon as they turn 18.
I won`t draw any conclusions from this but just adding to the debate.0 -

If you do a quick Google search you will find the answer to these questions, but you have to take into consideration that the military cost is nearly the same if they are in a conflict or at home. The royal family actual save the UK taxpayer money as the government receives most of the income from the royal estate, and only lets the royal family have a percentage of it.

Before you do that I could I have all the tax back that's help pay for you education and health care first?

People who earn "stupid" amounts of money normally pay 40% of it in taxes, so if it went up anymore, they would probable leave the country, and push the tax rate up for those who earn a "sensible" amount.0 -
Hereward - I have been paying tax and NI since the age of 16, only 6 years but that is enough and I am talking about wasting tax payers money - my education was NOT a waste as I have a good job out of it, also my healthcare?? I've never been seriously ill (lucky I know) and people who are seriously ill this is also NOT a waste of tax payers money...i am talking about people who are spongers....are you calling me a sponger by going to school? That is ridiculous!!Was debt free... then went travelling!0

I don't think paying 40% on income if you are earning millions a year is enough to be honest....especially as these types of people are well overpaid for what they do (kicking a ball around a field) when you get firefighters, police officers and nurses than earn nothing compared to it!Hereward wrote:People who earn "stupid" amounts of money normally pay 40% of it in taxes, so if it went up anymore, they would probable leave the country, and push the tax rate up for those who earn a "sensible" amount.[/COLOR]Was debt free... then went travelling!0 -

My comment about if I could have my taxes back was meant to be tongue in cheek. It was also a quick highlight that you are effectively having to pay for all of your healthcare and education after you receive them and, more than likely to still be "in debt" to previous tax payers. I agree that education and health are not wastes of taxpayers’ money, but you seemed far too quick to judge a young lady without full knowledge of her situation.0 -

Whereas if you catch a kid playing up now and tell their parents, you'd get a mouthful of abuse more than likely....and why? Because the parents are just children themselves! I cannot really put people down for being materialistic as I was once myself (check out my signature!) which i take full responsibility for, and I agree whole heartedly with everything else you have said. By the time I am at retirement age, i dread to think what kind of state this country will be in!Was debt free... then went travelling!0 -

I agree than at my young age (only having paid tax for 6 years) that I probably still effectively owe other taxpayers but what about the people who are now in their late 50s who have just been told they've got to wait even longer before they retire? I also see that every situation is different and where some people do genuinely need help from the government, a vast majority don't. I am definately not repremanding single parents as I am sure this must be a tough and unavoidable situation but you cannot deny that there are people in this country who are sponging money from the government without just cause? If these people didn't take this money and earned and contributed themselves then surely education would be in a better state, as would healthcare? Was debt free... then went travelling!0 -

Well don't worry, you can rest safe in the knowledge that by the time your old, so will I be and we shall both be suffering the wrath!
Race you to the bottle of anti-depressants!

I have no problem with essential services staff (nurses, doctors, firemen, policemen) being paid footballer-size wages, but I don't want my tax rate (and everybody else for that matter) being so high (probably 98%!) that I cannot afford anything. People are only worth (wages) that somebody else is willing to pay; therefore, footballers get large salaries as the team bosses think that they can earn more money from them (sponsorship, for example).0
