Does anything ever come down?

Not sure if this needs to be moved, but feel it quite apt for the DFW board as most with debt are struggling to get out of it.

I just wanted to start a thread to talk about the prices of things which come down. We all see petrol, gas, electricity, housing, rent, mortgages, council tax, lifes little luxuries like ciggies and alcohol, anything with a little bit of enjoyment in it, london congestion charges...they just keep going up and up, way past the wage rise rates.

But, it's easy to look at all of this and seem glum...

So what comes down?

At the moment, I'm afraid all I can see is Broadband prices thanks to competition. Oh, and car's are a lot cheaper than they used to be.

But there must be other things?!

It seems I pay £27 a week just to have my bins collected from the council tax at the moment (I know they do other things before anyone starts!!) Will council tax EVER come down again?!

Hopefully my debt will start to come down soon!!!!!! ;)

I know what you mean though.....as soon as one thing goes down, something always goes up even more!

Interest rates are worrying me at the moment!!!!!

Fortunately I don't smoke or drink, but am now starting to pay childcare, as I am back to work tomorrow............now THAT has gone up astronomically over the past 7 years!!!!!!

You can get cheap electrical items I spose, and computers. Don't think they have come down greatly though? You just maybe have more choice now. I.e. with a TV. You can spend 1.5k+ or you can spend 200 quid. Suppose your getting more telly though for the £200 than you would of some years ago.

The council tax is a serious dent to anyones wages. It's getting a little out of hand now I believe.

By the way, this post came from something else I read about the government urging us to save more and saying we are not saving enough. They really have no idea!

My dad spent £800 on a tv and video recorder in 1985; the tv was a tiny portable and the VCR was a huge top-loader. £800 was probably about a quarter of his annual salary.

For a quarter of the average annual salary now you could buy several huge plasma screen tvs, DVD recorders etc :)

We're suffering from the governments, pledge not to put up income taxes.
Propotionately less people paying income tax so money comes from other places i.e. things that were paid out of income tax come out of other "taxes"

So increase council tax, congestioncharge, toll roads, lottery, premium bonds, privatisations, NI, ....
Basically get money from anywhere that doesn't look like income tax and try to get as much as possible financed by other means.

Unfortunately this often targets people less able to pay.

Mortgages (and debt in general), tax are now a much greater proportion of expenses than they used to be as electrical goods, cars, food, clothes, etc come down in price.
