Just been out walking the dogs, and the blackberries arent quite ready yet where we live, had a taste, the odd maggot doesnt bother me :rotfl: but we found some other fruit and we arent too sure about them. One of the dogs had tried to eat it, but decided against it, but I had a taste and it tastes a bit like a nectarine. My friend thinks they may be a type of plum, but they arent plum coloured, more like a tomato colour, and smaller than a plum if you see what I mean. I've brought some home with me and am going to do a google search to see what I can find, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what they could be, I hope they arent poisonous, as we've eaten quite a few :embarasse

They're probably a type of golden plum - anything like this?

    Plums
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

I think there British plums, just did a google search. They do actually look a bit like rosehips, thats what I used to think they were when I seen the ones that have fallen on the path, but they've got stones, not seeds. Anyway, now I think I know what they are, I'm gonna get some more tomorrow, theres absolutely loads of them where I walk the dogs. I would post a link to some pics of them if I knew how to :embarasse

I couldn't see the piccy in your link(too late I suspect), but they are probably cherry plums, I've discovered loads of these in our village in the past week and now have 3 overflowing ice cream tubs full and there are plenty more to collect. They are very tasty and apparently make very good jam(which is what I intend to do with them). I've found red and yellow ones here, HTH.

Ooh - all this lovely free fruit sounds good!
Not suprisingly the boys came back with their punnet full today :D
Also rescued a few nuts that DS3 had left in his pocket (about to go through the WM) DS1 thought they were acorns, lol.
If you want to be sure of getting rid of the maggots you need to leave the blackberries to soak in the water for a while. My mum allways added salt, but I find a good soak gets them out. Perhaps I'm sad, but I love seeing them all in the bottom of the sink! Found a few fatties today ;)

Well i've just finished my blackberry jelly and its delicious! Thank you for the help.

I picked up a sieve that is funnel shaped and hooks on the side of pans (cant remember the name for the life of me!) I think they are quite expensive in the shops but this one only cost me 20p!

I liquidised the warm fruit then pushed it through the sieve. I added a couple of spoons of lemon to help with setting. Then added the sugar. The jelly I tested on the plate has set beautifully.

I've read in lots of places that blackberry jelly doesnt keep very well so rather than making loads now, is it worth just freezing loads of blackberries and then taking them out to make jelly as and when needed?
