That's why grey squirrels have killed off the native red ones - they can tolerate unripe food, so the red squirrels were starved out - no nuts left to ripen!

Please excuse my ignorance (you can tell I'm not the country type!). I have a thorny bush full of berries in my garden. They look like blackberries (I think) but I would like to be sure before i poison anyone. Is there an online site that could id my fruit? I would probably be able to pick out a banana in a line up, but only probably! Your help is much appreciated.

  • there are lots of places near bolton to go blackberry picking and apple trees and gooseberries.
I moved to rochdale 10 years ago and the first thing we did was to go asking the locals where we could find our goodies.
and we still go down to bolton to get our crops lol :)
  • I only wish hedgerows were easier to get to in a wheelchair - I used to love picking blackberries as a kid, but watch out for little spiders - they luv 'em too.

My favourite free pickins as a nipper were chestnuts in the autumn and damsons, plums and apples in the late summer (some of that was scrumpin' tho, which I guess is a bit naughty) :)

And, of course, no chance for the reds to reproduce - with unripe nuts.

not sure about an online reference but if you go to the market, or into a superstore fruit and veg section, you'll see blackberries packaged up for sale at extortionate prices - you could compare yours with their's

Devastated that i missed the raspberries this year, we get loads nearby and no-one picks them[perhaps they dont recognise them without a supermarket label). Unfortunately summer was too hot and they all ripened too early and fried to a crisp in the sun, even the wildlife didn't get a chance to enjoy them. Must make sure I go looking earlier next year

went to cannock chase, armed with boxes to pick today, but not ready there yet!

    xx

You have to wait til late August, early Sept for the fruit to be ready on Cannock Chase, then you have to get em before the birds! :rotfl: Try up by the White House or the German Cemetary. Mind you it's that vast try anywhere! LOL :p
