I was drawn to this thread........ (I had loads of problems setting up network). Have you set it up with cables to start with to make sure the connections will work? If you have and it works with cables I can't advise as to the wireless bit as I don't use it yet.

At what stage are you getting a problem?

Does this link take you to the router's Settings page?

If so, go to the bottom and click Connection Status to see if you're connected to the internet.

Am I missing something? If she's reading these posts then she is connected to the internet but not necessarily by her wireless connection isn't she?

When I set my router up with cables, the first problem I had was to do with putting the wrong Basic Settings so I couldn't even get a connection.

Have you run the Network Connections wizard on the other two computers again?

Was there anything you can connect (?!) to the non-connectivity?

No I was missing something - I didn't realise there were 3 PCs.

I guess most of us with broadband have a backup dial-up modem so we can still connect if the broadband isn't working? But that's another issue.

    So, to summarise the facts:

Broadband is coming into the router

The router is correctly passing it to the wired PC

BOTH wireless PCs/laptops are not connecting to the router - not even to that link I gave?

So it seems that the router is not transmitting wirelessly. I'm assuming it didn't get moved on Sunday?

Is the aerial screwed in correctly?

If so it might be worth rebooting the router (i.e. unplug it from the mains electricity, wait ten seconds and then plug it back in again).

    Hi Glad

Have you changed anything else since Sunday?

We have a wireless set up and it can be difficult to work out what is causing the problem.
Things I would check are as follows:
    (start with the laptop)

Do you have a network connection on the laptop? obviously not so you need to find out why.

Go to Network Connections in Control Panel ( there are several ways of getting to this point depending on which version of Windows you use.)

You should be able to view the status and repair the connection hopefully it will work.

I am not that technical but I usually manage to fathom out what's wrong with ours, it is usually BT dropping the connection, but having a working PC puts that one out in your case.

It doesn't seem likely that you have a faulty network card, not if two aren't working..

Hope this helps a bit, I hate it when my notebook won't connect.

Good Luck....or hope there may be some more techies on later;)

  • Connect your laptop directly to the router and see if the laptop still connects to the www.

If it does it means your network adapter settings are good and that all you have lost is wireless connectivity.

If the suggested router reboot doesn't work just re-enter all your wireless settings on each machine (SSID, Channel, Passkey, Encryption, Speed, MAC filtering/addresses) and try to reconnect.
