Selling your stuff on Amazon - Part 6- Advice for newbies in first post

Hi all,
I have had 4 books sell today, but when I go to my closed listings only 3 of them are closed.
I have looked at the one not closed and it is still available. In my account it is a completed sale.
Should I close the sale myself. Or should I wait until monday and speak to Amazon.
I do have another 2 copies the same condition if I wads lucky enough to sell one.
Any thoughts.

Cat - I have purchased 2 pallets of books from ebay and I was very happy with them both, I am now looking for another pallet. You have to be careful that you don't get the duds, but some people really tell you what you will be getting, some have full lists, and 2 last week had their amazon userids in the listing so that you could see all their books actually on amazon. Why not have a look now and then if there are any you are not sure about post the link on here and we will all tell you what we think.
I purchased a wholesale lot of new travel pictionary games this week on ebay, got 48 of them and they worked out at 66p each, should get up to £7.50 each on amazon and up to £5 on ebay, great stocking fillers. I'll let ya know if they sell well.

Annie - I use online postage all the time now and I just don't get any proof of postage, I just put them straight into the post box and drop the bigger ones into the store, I don't even line up. I realised that I have been selling on amazon since march and have probably sold about 300 books and none of them have been lost by royal mail and fingers crossed it won't happen very often. If they cost more than £20 I will get proof otherwise I figure paying for an odd book lost say once or twice a year is worth all the time I save by not having to go to the post office everyday. However, that is my opinion, you do what feels right for you, personally I looooooove the online postage, it's so quick and easy.

I am wary of ebay incase I get someone elses unsellables !! What sizes of book purchases would you recommended getting from ebay- if you would recommend it at all.
I am probably not the best person to discuss ebay - apart from the fact I don't often win or miss the auction end- however, I will pass on what little I have learned!! FFM mentioned that some lots on ebay are Amazon sellers selling their penny books, by recognising their userid. I have bought new books off ebay, and I have found these are more difficult to sell as you are in competition with all the bookstores, whereas with second-hand books it is I guess a bit more random??
I did buy some second hand books the other week which I was pretty sure might all be penny books as I am sure the seller sells on Amazon, although I had seen some titles on the auction which I had been able to look up. A lot were penny books, but there were some not bad ones in there. I have listed some on RISI instead of Amazon, and will only swap for books that have value on Amazon (or if they have something I really fancy for me).
I have just bought some more used books off ebay - "won" two lots at 99p per lot - but most of them probably turkeys, but haven't got round to listing them all yet  (although one of them was the exact book a friend had asked me to look out for a few days earlier (I didn't have a list, just pictures of some of the books) - bit spooky that - and as my husband says, I will never be a hard-nosed businesswoman as I just gave it to her instead of selling it to her!!)
I have since won another small lot off same ebayer, he then emailed me asking if I was interested in books in general, he had some for freecycle I could have and I could have his other ebay lots if there were no takers!!! All for 99p! A friend picked up 3 boxes from him this morning! But that was just lucky I guess!!!
I always watch out when sellers have job lots and are also selling books themselves on ebay - there must be a good reason why they aren't selling those books in the job lot themselves. But if it was cheap enough and not too far to travel (bear in mind petrol costs) then I might go for it then.
As Kat said, if there are pictures/lists of titles, then you can research them on Amazon first to see whether it is worthwhile. As Kat also suggests, post an item number on here and someone with a better idea than me will be able to tell you what they think :rotfl:

Hi Matt
When you listed the book did you increase the quantity to more than 1? If you list with say, a quantity of 2 and then sell 1, the quantity reduces to 1 but you don't get a closed listing email ('cos it hasn't closed).
Alternatively, is it in your open listings but with a quantity of '0'? Sometimes they take a while to move from 'open' to 'closed' even though they have sold. But this is okay because if the quantity is '0' you can't actually sell another copy. When the item 'moves' across to 'closed' then you get the email.
Other than those ideas - I have no idea!

Slightly O/T but does anyone know if I can get a book repaired? I bought an old Mustang manual for my Dad from Abebooks. It was in unread condition but discoloured with age.
When he opens it to read it the pages fall out, it looks like it is age which has caused it. Would I be able to get this repaired anywhere?
Thanks,Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!0 -

Hi
I'm sure there must be some professional book repairers, although a quick look on Google didn't come up with much.
You could try posting your question on the Amazon Discussion Board (they don't all bite).

There are a couple of guys on there that deal in the older books rather than modern paperbacks and they are usually very helpful.
