Smokers (and I do this) may well be finishing a ciggie as they get to the shop, they'll walk across the carpark finishing it off and then get rid of it before entering (please note : I have no problem at all with a smoking ban in a shop). If there wasn't an ashtray, the floor would be littered with butts (that's human nature, it won't change, live with it) so really, in environmental terms, an ashtray at the entrance is a very positive thing.

Ashtrays smell, and they're unpleasant to be near and more often than not people will stand near then to finish what they're smoking and when they're at supermarket entrances, you have to walk past the smoke to get inside - and therein lies the problem.
All that's needed is a little consideration to the people who don't want to breath in smoke, just a short walk away from the entrance is all that's needed, it would take a matter of moments.
I don't have a problem taking a wide berth of a smoker so I can avoid the smoke, in a public space or open area, but in situations where you can't avoid the smoke I think it's unfair. (and I have no intentions of not shopping at my local supermarket).
What a nice sensible contribution.
Sadly in these modern self-centred times expecting a little consideration from others is too much to ask (see threads from the obnoxious so-and-sos who have issues with supermarkets providing P&C parking and trying to stop abuse of same).
However I have never seen anyone hanging round the entrances to supermarkets- stubbing points or not.
The thread is not bashing smokers by any means- it's only having a go at the thoughtless and inconsiderate ones. If you are a smoker, and you read the opening post as directed at you, maybe you need to take a good look at your behaviour. Because if you are a thoughtful and considerate person who just happens to smoke, nothing here is in any way critical of you.0 -

Smoking doesn't just affect people when they have to walk through it. I can smell it if the person in the car next to me is smoking. I know when someone walks past my house smoking and i can smell it from people on the other side of the street. It is a pervasive smell and different from any other.
Sometimes I even feel panicky when i am forced to breathe it as I hate the thought of that poison entering my system - let alone that of my children.
The worst thing is that people seem to think that stepping away from you is enough - it isn't. you need to go up the road, round the corner and into the shed for me not to notice the disgusting stink!0 -
God I hate the 'As a Mother' argument, it means absolutely nothing in terms of debating.
There is little to no evidence that second hand smoke, particularly in the case you are complaining about, is harmful.
Secondly is it REALLY that bad having 2 seconds of walking through some smoke? I hate the smell of fish but I'm not going to complain about the fact the fishmongers laways has an open window.
As Bill Hicks said 'I would quick smoking if it wasn't for the fact that I would turn into a non-smoker! Whining, self rightous #%&s
anyway i dont know why i am ranting on a discussion forum when i need to do my postal gold tracking and see where my gold has got to!0 -

I thought they were essentially rented cars paid for by DLA. And most rental cars, you can't smoke in.
