The reason there are ashtrays near the entrance is quite simple.
Smokers (and I do this) may well be finishing a ciggie as they get to the shop, they'll walk across the carpark finishing it off and then get rid of it before entering (please note : I have no problem at all with a smoking ban in a shop). If there wasn't an ashtray, the floor would be littered with butts (that's human nature, it won't change, live with it) so really, in environmental terms, an ashtray at the entrance is a very positive thing.
they would be just as effective in 'environmental' terms if they were moved away from the entrances. I realise that if you want to smoke before you go shopping, that the easiest place to put it out is at the door where the ashtrays are. However, if the supermarkets would move them to slightly further away, then it would be a matter of 10 to 15 smoke free paces from the ashtray to the shop.0 -
I'm sure it would, but human nature being what it is - the doorway would be littered.
I'm sure those who plan these things are realistic enough to realise that and that's why they're where they are

If you moved it 10 to 15 paces away from the door would the problem still happen but a bit further away from the door? :think:If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550

And about the assumption that I am a 'whinger' and a 'do gooder, I can assure you I am neither.
But I am a Mother, who will protect her child from whatever I feel is a danger to her, including second hand smoke. I'm also an Athsmatic, and yes, my asthma is exacerbated by smoke.
Personally I feel that 99% of people who realised that they're causing problems smoking in the entrances would happily and considerately move away from the doors. I don't think that the replies here reflect what people would do in the real world.
which brings me to the conclusion that it YOU are the wingers, not me.
Oh and by the way, my OH would like to assure everyone that he is Very very happy with me.
I just hope you also Dont drink any form of alcohol in front of her or around her and refrain from watching tv when she is around just in case she should see a drug or an equally underisable substance0 -

I think its about time we stopped eating in public places. Ive been outside a pub before having a smoke and when i walk in all i can smell is cooked animal flesh.
I have one 1 occasion felt that i wanted to eat a "roast dinner" but am glad that i didnt.
It really annoys me when i go out for a beer and a fag and get made to feel like i want a steak or some pasta just because the people eating are so inconsiderate.0 -

lol - ignorance is bliss :rotfl:Enfieldian wrote: »...My fags just produce smoke that goes straight up in the air and dissipates.......
That sounds fantastic! Could you please tell us all the name of this wind-resistant brand?? Maybe then all the smokers on here could start smoking them. Problem solved! :rotfl:Marching On Together
I've upped my standards...so up yours!

But I am a Mother, who will protect her child from whatever I feel is a danger to her, including second hand smoke. I'm also an Athsmatic, and yes, my asthma is exacerbated by smoke. ah here we go, wondered how long it would take to get to the "but will no one think of the poor children" comments! :T

I really don't think so. Shoppers are heading for the entrance. A few will deviate to the ashtray, but not many.
I don't for a minute believe that supermarkets, with all their clever marketing people, really want ashtrays at their entrances. They've simply accepted that's what's needed to avoid a mess.0 -
Has no-one considered the possibility that this whole smoking ban is nothing more than an exercise in control by this increasingly controlling government?
Consider the facts. We can buy cigarettes, but we can't actually smoke them anywhere. Even where we can legally smoke (pub gardens etc) we still get grief. This suggests the government still want our tax (reasons already stated - but to re-iterate, smoking pays a 6th of the NHS bill), so want us to continue smoking.
But, what if we could have an experiment too? How easy would it be to demonise a section of our community within , ooh, lets say a couple of years?
Could we turn a previously tolerant nation into a divided one? Could we make non smokers, who had previously tolerated smokers for decades, even centuries, actually aggressive towards smokers in the street. Would they actually complain about them smoking - even when they are completely within the law?
We'd need to completely exaggerate the risk of passive smoking of-course, but no-one's going to actually check the facts are they? Just say its poisonous and they'll all believe it. No-one actually checks things out themselves anymore - they believe anything "authority" tells them.
Well, end result, well done chaps - classic spot of brainwashing!!. So if we can do this with smoking, where else could we go with it?
Scary huh? Still sod it - I'm emigrating in 3 years.0
