Tescos can be so mixed in their reactions to coupons - it can be frustrating and embarrassing.

I had £7.50 of printed vouchers taken off my shopping at Tesco tonight. Just picked the only young lad on the tills and he keyed everyone of them in, even duplicates.:j

I took a few printed coupons to Waitrose (the new London Bloomsbury store) and I was soooooooo embarrassed. The sales assistant questioned the coupons, and then said very loudly that I had not purchased any of the items, then asked if the coupons had been photo copied (my printer is a high-end b/w laser printer), THEN the guy behind me asked why it was taking so long, AND the sales assistant started to tell him the details of my transaction!!! I very quietly asked her if she was familiar with the Waitrose coupon policy and I told her that I had a copy of the policy in my bag – an email from Waitrose customer service explaining the policy, but she proceeded to shout that I hadn’t purchased the products and she would need to speak to a supervisor. By this point, the queue had grown, so there were a few more people to witness this sales assistant completely humiliate me. THREE sales assistants came over to ask what was going on, the humiliation continued. Finally, I said that I didn't want to buy the things and I walked away, only to have her shouting behind me - so that more people could hear - how I had inconvenienced her and that now she would have to void the few items at her register....

This was a few weeks ago and I haven't been back since, not sure if I will ever go back there.

Why do these sales assistants think it is ok to publicly humiliate people? Some kind of power trip? Where is the customer service?
    I :heart2: Waitrose

My other half works for Waitrose and she would be horrified to hear of a customer being treated like that. Waitrose pride themselves on putting customers first and bending over backwards to keep them happy. If you were to write to them explaining your experience I guarantee they would aologise profusely, compensate you for your trouble and give the store assistant concerned a strong talking to...

    From their website:
Waitrose Customer Service is open 8am-10pm Monday -Friday, 8am-9pm Saturday and 9am-7pm Sunday.

It really can be hit & miss!
I weighed up the lad at the Tesco till the other day, he took 3 (of my higher value) coupons which is their policy & seemed happy to do so. As I always split my shopping now I tried my luck & gave in 6 lower value coupons with 2nd lot & all were accepted. I think you have to play it by ear as it varies everytime.

I don't get it either nurse sue! Of course you CAN redeem the coupon if you've bought the product! Your ASDA seems pretty bad with coupons - or maybe they haven't got much competition around?

I must say I'm feeling really fortunate from this perspective: we've got them all (several Tescos, Co-ops, Somerfields, Farmfoods, Iceland, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Waitrose, M&S, Morrisons, even Londis ), and I think this is one of the most helpful things for us - as consumers who want to save a bit of money, by means of redeeming coupons. I would advise you to email ASDA and ask for their coupon policy in writing (by email). I've got it recently, and now I never leave home without it in my handbag, it gives me a lot of confidence to have it like this, in writing. I've shown it to the ASDA staff on two occasions, and it has helped in both cases: in the first case, the guy at the till read it, then accepted the coupons without even asking for a supervisor's confirmation of the policy (it was not a huge sum - £2 off in coupons for products not bought, yet sold by ASDA, on a £20 shop). On the second occasion, I was at the self-scan, a supervisor came up, I showed her the policy, she said something like: 'Yep, we've recently started to accept them', and then let me redeem the coupons (again, only 10% - but every little helps!;)).

Good luck with this, and hope you'll give us better news soon ;)

P.S.: From what I know, Sainsbury's do accept coupons, but only if you have bought the product.

If it's any help I work on Sainsburys checkouts and I haven't a clue about a voucher policy. I've been till trained at 2 stores, one in London and my current one 60 miles away, and never heard of a voucher/coupon policy. We were just taught how to scan vouchers or enter them manually if they wouldn't scan. I know it's naughty but generally if the customer is polite to me I'll take all their vouchers.......I've never knowingly seen printed ones.......but if they're rude and snotty I'll only take the ones for the items they've bought. A friendly hello and a smile goes a long way with cashiers!
