Birds Eye cod fish fingers used to be a 36 pack for £4.99, now a 30 pack for the same money. Another one we no longer buy....

Copella Apple & Elderflower Juice @ Sainsburys, the 'New & Improved' 750ml bottle replaced the 1 litre bottle and the price dropped by just 2p.

This is effectively a price increase of 31%. Can anyone tell me what was wrong with the 1 litre bottle?
They've now introduced a larger bottle (1.25l IIRC) that when I bought my last stash was much closer to the old price point so I bought 4 I can't live without my apple & elderflower juice I just can't I went about a fortnight refusing to pay £1.66 for 750ml when the week before it was that price for 1L but I was a grumpy girl :p

I've noticed the cornettos shrinking too, I used to lick the cardboard lid as it was touching almost all of the ice cream but now there's about 1/2 inch of space between them!:(

To risk playing devil's advocate; Supermarkets/food producers are shrinking products because it works. Far too many people choose supermarket based on 'value' (actually cheapness), and far too many people choose products on price (not value).

The majority of fresh meats in supermarkets sell at the same price points they did 6 years ago. I know this because I work in a related sector. The price of producing fresh meat has increased notably over this time as feed, wage, and regulation costs (among others) increase. The supermarkets believe, and research supports them, that customers would be more put off by price increases than size decreases.

I think this must be a record: Tesco has literally halved the size of their frozen Healthy Living oven chips, and the price has remained the same!!! Talk about 'Every little helps...'!!!
  • Sent a complaint to Copella via their website and this is the response I got from them:

    Dear Ms xxx

Thank you for your recent email regarding our Copella Juice.

First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to say we are delighted to hear you are such a strong advocate of our Copella Juice. I am sorry to hear of your disappointment regarding our recent package and pricing changes.

The reason we have undertaken these changes has been based on intensive Market Research which has shown us that the majority of Copella consumers have suggested that the 750ml bottle is better suited their needs,

Copella consumers from large families have suggested the 1.25L pack is their preferred choice. In light of this, we therefore wanted to reflect our consumer preferences where possible.

In relation to pricing, Copella Juices recommends a selling price of £1.69 for a standard 750ml bottle of juice, for the 1L was £1.99 and for 1.25L it is available at £2.59. However as I’m sure you appreciate if a retailer chooses to sell a product at a higher or lower price then they may do so we can only recommend the price, we have found, that most outlets support our suggested prices.

We welcome all feedback from our consumers regarding our products and promotions as this helps us when considering future ideas.

Thank you once again for taking the time and trouble to contact us – your feedback is valued and much appreciated.

  • How about Cadburys creme eggs, Tesco custard slices, a number of potato crisp brands and that is just for starters. Do these manufacturers and retailers think we are stupid. A Trading Standards colleague is already looking into this matter.

I received the same letter from copella - I'm not buying it anymore on principle.

Smaller sizes, even if we stomach the price inflation, creates more waste due to the extra packing ie 3 x 1litre bottles = 3 bottles compared to 4 x 750ml bottles for the same volume.

Re the oil price I thought oil prices per barrel were much lower at the moment than in previous years so I don't see how that comes into play unless we are talking petrol (tax) prices?
