Every year I try loads of companies, and for me it always seems that L Hughes and Co are cheapest, closely followed by the Northern Bank.

I don't think the difference in prices of insurance between here and the rest of the UK is now as great as it once was, well certainly not compared to London. Working in the media (like I do) doesn't help. I was once told that the reason working in the media affected my premium was that I "may be driving well-known people around". Well there you go. I'm obviously driving Terry Wogan round Shepherd's Bush at dangerously high speed in my sleep.

I switched from Abbey to Adelaide after getting a really reasonable quote for my last year of insurance. Then my car blew up (that's a whole other story, don't get me started on certain makes of car and their dealerships) and I bought a car with a year's free insurance - I'm on tenterhooks, though, as they set my excess at £600!!! Oh well... It'll be interesting to see if they'll quote me when this free year is up. I agree with you Marksi, they really do get the arm into you if you work in the media. Hello?! Is this Northern Ireland or Northern Iraq - how blinkin' dangerous a place can it really be?!? And do you see THAT many hugely valuable celebs being chauffered by journos?!

  • I was quoted £960 by Hughes and Co. for me and my girlfriend (26 and 23 respectively) on a Fiesta or £750 for myself and I have 2 yrs no-claims!!
Went online to admiral and got cover for £647 for us both - they charged just £7 extra for having my girlfrend on it.
Shop around alot - and do the internet searches - elephant and admiral are cheap and insure people in Northern Ireland - don't ring them!!!! £1 a minute or somthing like that.
My only reservation is if I have a claim I have heard their customer service is not the best, but I am willing to take that risk to save so much money

I only bought my first car back in Jan this year... and I have also only had my full driver's license for 10 months so I knew I'd have a hard time getting insurance but I got a great deal!!!

I was initially getting quotes of around £1200 or £1700 but then I contacted this fella:

    Gareth Hunter - Tel: 028 9086 6103

I ended up getting my insurance for £640!!! And will end up this year (assuming I don't have an accident!) with FULL no-claims bonus!!!

Gareth Hunter takes your details, searches for the best deal and then tells you what he has found... then if you like what he has offered and wish to go with the quote he has found then he charges you only £20 for finding it for you! He knows about the offers and deals with a lot of the other insurance companies who operate in the province.

You don't pay if you don't accept any of the ones he finds so do try him!

  • Oh - and I should have added that the car was 1 year old and insured as a £5,000 car...

I've been with Alastair Laird's (028 8676 4138) for some years now, after Hughes went up and up and up with my insurance. I kept checking with several other companies each year, and they could never be beaten, so for the last year or two, so long as my premiums didn't go up too much, I didn't bother checking around too much. My last premium (last Sep) on a Zafira 1.8L,
with me F37, hubby 36 and childminder F27 was £470 approx., fully comp., full no claims.

I'll def be trying Gareth when my years ins is up - if it saves me the afternoon and 20 phone calls searching for quotes then it's worth £20 to me!

The best I've found so far was the NFU (Farmers union) coming in around £400 cheaper than the next nearest quote!
  • I've used Admiral for the last couple of years. Their customer service is terrible, but prices are cheapest by far.
