Have you got a Blue Cross locally or Dogs Trust? Also look on your council website, sometimes they have reduced cost neutering available.

This makes me really sad that you would even think of delaying doing the dogs. I own a wee staffie whom we rescued after someone tried to abandon it at the side of a motorway at about five months old!!!! Just like that with no care given to her welfare. She is the sweetest little dog ever. Doesn't seem keen on other dogs, which were are dealing with through training and lots of positive reinforcement, she had her first season three days after we got her, and it wasn't too bad at all, but we have wooden floors and she wasn't allowed upstairs, and her appointment for spaying has been booked for July and she will be chipped at the same time.

We were looking at the rescues for a dog when she came along, and she fits in so well to our family that we reckon fate brought her to us, but the amount of Staffies in the rescues is a damned disgrace. It is not right for people to keep breeding them, in fact, I have written to my MP asking about the chances of legislation to licence animal breeders to stop the unnecessary suffering that overbreeding is causing to thousand of animals all over the country. I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

Please get the male neutered ASAP and the b!tch as soon as your vet will allow. It's unfair to themto leave them whole and together, possibly beneficial for their health and not neccessary for their bloodlines, they are dogs, not the House of Windsor!

Jackieglasgow, after everyones help and advice I have pretty much decided to get the pup done rather than the male. I was rather silly in not realising the full impact of getting a female dog when I had an entire male in the household but at least I have the common sense to come on here and find out the best thing to do rather than doing nothing and it then being too late. I havent had her a week yet so everything is a bit all over the place. As I have said the male has sired before, this was with a reputable KC registered breeder and the pups had homes to go to, I dont plan mating the b!tch with my male or any other. I have found a vets that will do the pup before her first season as I posted earlier but I want to make sure this is the right thing to do for her as she is so young. It looks like there is a clear divide between people saying have her done before her 1st season or wait until she has had her 1st one??? If I dont want to run the risk of the male getting her pregnant then I am going to go down the line of getting her done asap as even if I get him done there is a chance he could still be fertile when she comes into season. I will then look at what health benefits there are in getting the male done as he is 6 and a half now.

I agree with your post - this last point really made me chuckle ... re the House of Windsor - see what perpetuating the bloodlines has done for them - unfortunate facial features and haemophilia - they are possibly the pugs of the human world! :rotfl:

Sorry to any ardent royalists (or pug lovers!) out there! ;)

Seriously though, I cant think of any good arguements to churn out any more poor staffies at the moment - I expect all of those dogs who have had their final needle today were bred by people who didnt expect that to be their fate.

bailey I appreciate what you're saying, but what if your dog manages to "get at" another b!tch somehow, whether it's through planning or serendipity? Another litter of poor wee dogs who are overbred as it is to line (in most cases) some neds pocket! It's just not fair on them. Your male dog doesn't need his b0ll0cks! And actually it's a lot less complicated procedure than you are planning on putting a BABY dog through. Why not neuter him first, let her have a season, then get her spayed?

That last comment from FC actually made me cry. The thought that that could have been my dog's - actually what I was going to type was my baby's - fate is awful. Poor animals.

Bailey, I know you have to do what is best for you, but I really and truly believe there is no need NOT to get your dog neutered too, and first, actually.

If you get both dogs neutered you won't have to agonise over who to do first and what if you are too early or too late. There is a small risk the b1tch can still get pregnant BEFORE you notice her first season, and if she is not fully grown the pregnancy will be higher risk than usual. There is obviously a much higher chance of your male getting to your female if you do not neuter than if you do!

There was a case in the papers very recently of an entire male attacking a child which was believed to be due to there being a b1tch in season in the household - that is what raging hormones can do to a frustrated male. :( You have already admitted that your male does have some aggressive tendencies, the reason is immaterial. Sorry but if you cannot afford to have both dogs neutered you clearly cannot afford two dogs. A loving home is only one facet of being a good pet owner IMO.

Its nothing short of a tragedy, to those of us who love dogs... look at the dogs needing rescue spaces in just one pound here... young dogs, old dogs, cute and not so cute - there is one clear factor which connects most of them.. their breed.

I had someone ring at the weekend - looking for places for their 5 yes 5 staffies that they no longer wanted. What could I do? The rescues are over run, the breed rescue cant cope, the pounds are full of them. The RSPCA will only offer to put them down.

I gave them as many phone numbers as I could, but who knows what fate awaits them now :(

I wish you hadn't posted that, I'm now trying to figure out how to get another one!

OP I'm sure you're fed up hearing it, but have a look at this, please!

Just read Hethmar's post, I was responding to FC. I might not read this thread again for a while as I am now sobbing.
