I have 2 staffies, male and female and have had them both done, and they are fit and healthy with no probs at all:D:DAs someone has already said if your boy has already been studded he will be a night mare at the first whiff of your !!!!! in season:eek::eek:
Our vets used to have a scheme where people on benefits could have their dogs neutered for £25.It was sponsored by the dogs trust:D"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Maybe someone could have her while she is in season? That sounds like a really good idea. We are all going away for a week in a caravan end of July, that could be fun if she hasnt had her season before then. She will be 7 months old by then.
yeah.. make sure its someone who really likes you and who isn't houseproud though - and who will watch the dog like a hawk, keep her on lead, and not let her go into the garden etc unnattended... they will even have to go out with her for her evening pee... its not unknown for dogs to smell an in season b1tch and come looking (they can smell one from up to six miles away!!) - there was someone on here a while ago who went outside to find her b1tch tied with an unknown dog who had broken into the garden... I also know someone whose small dog was mated with by an off lead dog, whilst he had her on a lead... personally, its not something I would ask anyone else to deal with though...
She may be clean and tidy in her season, and only leave a few drips of blood around, or she may be like a friend of mine's dog who dripped and smeared blood all over the carpets, furniture, up the walls etc.., there was not an extraordinary amount of blood, but the little dog seemed oblivious to it... the entire downstairs of the house was soon swathed in dust sheets!
Whichever way you look at it, I think having both dogs done is the sensible, hassle free option here - I can't see why your husband would make everyone jump through hoops and manage such a difficult situation, just so his dog still has its testicles... if he is that fussed, you can have prosthetic ones slipped in when they remove the dogs nadgers... but why anyone would care is beyond me...surely what is in the best interests of the dog should be paramount here...?0 -
Oh lovely! I can just bet you that I have the one that does it all over the place!
Maybe the male will have to go to his Nanna's then, but she makes him sleep in the kitchen under the table and he's used to my bed now! LBM 23-10-2009 - Total unsecured debt £39,638.65 _pale_

Just get em done... easier life for everyone! Some vets will spey before her first season, so if you decide that may be an option for you, it may be worth ringing round...0 -
Im glad you are having both neutered - as you say, the pup was given away because no one wanted her - 8000 a year are put down in the pounds for the same reason - no one should be breeding staffies now.0

What I want to know then after your posts is:
How old can the pup be spayed at? Spaying 'can' be done at 8 weeks  I've had my b1tch pups spayed between 5 and 8 months. Probably best to ask your Vets opinion as it will be him doing the op.Can she be done before her 1st season? Yes If she can will it stop the male from wanting to get it on with her? Yes
If the male is done someone posted he will still be fertile for a couple of months? She is 15 weeks old, have I got time to do him? Yes
My hubby is really against having the male done at the moment although I can see why it would be a good idea. He doesnt see why he has to lose his bits through no fault of his own. :rotfl:Not unsual for a bloke to feel this way...... but they don't seem to mind that females undergo a more invasive op.
I dont know who to do 1st????? Or who is best to be done???? There are reallty conflicting reports about cancers, cysts etc. Read all you can, speak to your Vet - and then make your mind up (to get them both neutered ASAP!! I may be a tad biased:))
I also live in Derbyshire so if anyone knows of any places round here to get discounts that would be great. It's worth phoning your nearest RSPCA or contacting your local council Dog Warden to ask if they know anyone that can help.
I could borrow the money and repay it back if I need to get it done now.
Thanks again for all your replies.
Thanks for posting and clearing up concerns xSome days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

I have found another vet who recommendeds spaying at 6 months before her 1st season. Opinion is really split about this. It makes your head spin. I may go for this option but I need to do further research first. LBM 23-10-2009 - Total unsecured debt £39,638.65 _pale_

if she was your only dog, and you had no holidays booked, then you may want to wait till after her first season... however, in the circumstances, I think an early spey would be preferable to the risk and difficulties associated with keeping them seperate whilst in season, or even an early pregnancy.
It may be worth considering getting them both done at the same timethis may be advantagous as they will both be recouperating together - otherwise, you will have the job of trying to keep one calm and away from pestering the other till they are healed...0 -
Do you live in an inner city area? Are you on benefits? Just trying to find vouchers for you.
Tell your husband to just google for rescue sites - then see how many of them are overwhelmed with staffies - and these are the ones who have lived to get in the rescue. Men are always reluctant to have dogs neutered - they seem to transfer their own feelings to the dog. The dog will be happier without the need to constantly search out !!!!!es in season and not be able to do anything about it.0 -
No, not on benefits, just a DMP which doesnt count. Live in a town, not inner city, both of us are working full-time. I'm also looking for vouchers, tried the dog trust, I can write to them enclosing details of my DMP and they will look at it but doubt they will offer me anything. The new vets I found will only accept a payment plan if I am on benefits too. LBM 23-10-2009 - Total unsecured debt £39,638.65 _pale_
