Henry's are the best, and they're cheap on Amazon at the mo:j:j

  • Without having read through this whole thread. I obtained a Henry in 1989. I don't have it any more (I donated it to my voluntary group), but I know it's still going strong.

    Might help your decision?

Have noooo experience of Henry's but gather for laminate floors you should opt for cylinders and uprights are better for carpets. Was impressed with our DC04, which survived HEAVY duty useage (picking up plaster, wood chips etc) when we were refurbing a house - other vac's failed within a few months - but agree that Dyson's are heavy so guess that's why they came up with the ball feature (assume they're easier/lighter to handle). Miele I've also read are the best for animal hair.... guess it all comes down to what you want it for/what's important to you.

I have a Dyson DC01. My parents gave it to me when they wanted a newer model. It has needed a belt change a few times but it does still work. They are better built now and my parents have had no problems at all with the one they bought about 5 years ago now (probably more) and they have a dog who mults like mad as did their last dog! Personally I don't like bags and neither do my parents. I agree with jenniewb about not having to worry if you hoover up money or anything else for that matter and getting it back.

  • Hi I use both. Dysons are great for quick cleaning or if you have pets. However, I work as a domestic cleaner and use my Henry for most of the time. Last for years with little or no maintenance and the bags are cheap. I'm on my second Dyson in 8 years and the uprights are easily broken if you don't carry them properly up stairs. Henrys have very long leads which is very useful especially in some houses where there are insufficient electrical sockets. If you have access to a MACRO they frequestly sell Henrys for £69 plus VAT which is great value.
  • We have a Henry Extra, it has a motorised end (I've gone blank to think of what its called) so it gives more suction. Its great on pet hair, very reliable never broke down, the bags are cheap (though with the very cheap bags I find they need changing more often) and it has a long lead and also a long nozzle. Its cleaned up all different types of mess and never had any problem.

Previously we had a hoover pure power, which also had a special attachment for animal hair but this broke down. My nana had a special animal hair dyson (it was purple) but the filter broke on it alot and she changed it to a pull along vacuum.

So in my vote, definately a Henry, they have amazing suction and you can clean a dog hair covered carpet (used to have a white dog with a red rug) in no time at all with very little work. No hands and knees required.

If you can, go for a Miele cylinder. I got an older model for £99 off Amazon. It knocks the socks off both Henry and the Dyson (which I hate as they are so clumsy and heavy).

Comes with some nice tools, the bags can be bought cheaply off Ebay, and it does a fantastic job.

I've had a Dyson (DC03) & now have Henry. I would vote for Henry any day. I have a mixture of laminate floors, ceramic tiles and fitted carpets.

I vote Henry (or Hetty if you want the pink look and the long lashes!)... easy low- maintenance and uncomplicated. I prefer bagged vacuum cleaners because only small amounts of dust escape when you change the bag.... and as for the dyson... I didn't like emptying the tub, but it was interesting to see what you were picking up as you vaccumed!!!

Go for the Henry. I think parts are also much cheaper to replace, if needed to. :T

Sorry that did not post for a while. Just wanted to say that I decided to buy Dyson at the end. And I think it is great. I really LOVE it!!!
Thank you all for your advice. I would not go back to a bag vacuum ever.
