Sad day :(

Just got back from the vets, we had to have our 16 1/2 year old crossbreed PTS - hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life.

I got her as a rescue from Battersea when she was about 5 months old, and she's been my constant companion since then - and loved my DH from the moment she met him, although she wasn't that keen on men to start with!

The house seems so quiet now, even though she had dementia towards the end and changed considerably, she was still a presence.

Hopefully time will be a healer and DH and I won't be feeling as horrible as we are now - she was a fighter till the end, she had to be sedated first (wasn't that happy with the needle in her leg) and the 3 lots of anaesthetic to do the job properly - she didn't want to leave us.

Don't know why I've typed this, don't know what else to do I suppose!

O {{{{Sagaris}}}}} we had to have two dogs put to sleep in past 2 yrs its the hardest thing to do but I am so glad you stayed with her its the kindest thing, but soo hard. My heart goes out to you, time does make it easier but you wouldnt feel like this if you hadn't loved her.

We really did love her, I know everyone thinks their dog is special, but she was, she was so kind, loved everybody (especially children) and didn't have a nasty bone in her body.

Thank you so much for your kind words rachelhen. x

Oh, Sagaris it's so brave of you to have spent the last moments with your darling. It is so heartbreaking but you can be comforted with the knowledge that you gave her a lovely life, one I daresay she wouldn't have swapped for anything else in the world. It's a hoary old platitude that time is a healer but it is absolutely true. Every day that passes the loss of her will be a tiny bit less painful until the day comes when you can think of her and remember all the wonderful things about her life with you and not the terrible pain of her absence.

    Hugs to you.

Most pet owners know how difficult it is when pets have to finally leave, whatever the circumstances.
We lost a Skye Terrier to cancer just two years ago and still miss him dreadfully, even though we have another one now who is just as loving.

On a previous occasion when we lost a dog, the window cleaner asked us why it was not around any more - as it used to bark at him through the windows as he went round the house claening them.
We told him what had happened and then he told us that he, too, had had to have his dog put down through illness. He burst into tears as he was telling us.
Thinking it must have happened around the same time as ours, I asked him when the dog went and he said it had been three years previously and he still couldn't help crying when he talked about him!

I do hope you get back to near-normal as soon as possible - it may seem a little callous at the moment, but one sure way to heal the worst of the pain is to go back to Battersea and find another dog to rescue just as you did with this one - I'm sure it would be the best way to pay tribute to him for the love and companionship he has given you over the past years.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words - it means a lot.

I'd love to have another rescue dog, but when we got her I was working part time, a divorce meant I had to go back to work full time (but my daughters were around to do the walking etc). Now we are out all day it wouldn't be fair to leave a dog in an empty house for that long - as she was old she used to sleep most of the time, we managed to get home to let her out for a wander during the day.
