On the one ring, I noticed if I'm quick enough, I can answer the phone and talk. But if you let the phone ring fully once, it stops.
But if you'r the person dialing towards the house phone it sound if the phone has been picked up and silence. I just hope BT believes me when I try to explain.
When I asked for line check on Saturday, they replied "Yes theres a fault on the line and its been traced back to the house."
Has BT got the technology to fault find from behind a desk and computer; and accurately pinpoint the fault back to the house, with out sending out an Engineer up the pole ?

When we had BT, on the 2nd occasion they said the fault was within our house, even though we had done the usual checking, I say they it was the online fault report tool I used, though they did call on the mobile to ask more questions.

I knew the fault wasn't in the house even though they said it was, so just accepted that they would charge if it was found to be, though as I said I knew it wasn't.

They came out and replaced the cabling from the the underground wires from right outside my house up to the green cabinet, which isn't that far away I can see it from my house, and there is an engineer there at least every other day. (I live right on the edge of the area where half is underground wiring, the other half overhead wiring).

Water had got into my wiring somewhere between just outside my house and the green cabinet, on a previous visit they switched me over to a different pair going to the exchange.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • you probably have a rectified short circuit or a low resisitance short circuit. i am unable to fathom by what you have said whether the probability is a BT fault or a fault with your wiring....with everything disconnected (wiring and apparatus ) and just one known working phone in the master socket ...do you get the same problem ?
in answer to your 'how can it just go faulty' ? question.....it is just the same whether it be a phone line , kettle or faithful motor car.
bt's test system can only give an indication as to where the likelihood of a fault may be....it is actually more reliable at ascertaining a fault is in BT's network and i can't think of any test result that although normally would indicate a fault within the house that can't be replicated by an external fault. the only clear indication that the fault is the customers problem comes from dialogue between the service advisor and the customer

Thanks Bex Tech & Hammy The Hammer for your feedback. I'm away for the next few days, so I won't be reporting the fault until the weekend, to make sure I'm here when an Engineer calls.
Hammy The Hammer, answer to your question, yes the phone does work in the master socket, as it does in all other extension sockets; dialing tone and allowing me to ring out.
The problem is incoming calls, now one ring max, and then it sounds like someone has lifted the phone and constant silence.

As previously mentioned, when I had the line checked, BT admitted there is a fault on the line, but were very quick to add, that the problem was on my side, inside the house.

The other weird thing is that when the BT operator contacted me, they told me to unplug everything for 20 minutes and try again.
Did this and reset up phone, and the phone rang 8 times until BT 1571 messenger kicked in. Magic! thats exactly what I want.
However hour or two later the old problem returned.
I've been told by disconnecting everything, especially your broadband Netgear modem router, that it resets something on your line in the exchange.

I am going to report the fault and will post the outcome. Again many thanks
to all, for their feedback and supportive information.
  • nothing is reset in the exchange by you disconnecting your equipment. if you have plugged a known good phone into the master socket with all extension WIRING disconnected and the problem remains the fault is a line fault which BT will repair. ( disclaimer ...unless your internal wiring before the master socket has been damaged / got damp )
the reason they tell you the fault is at your property is that by the test result they got it indicates a high probability of that being the case. it gives you a chance to make some initial checks so that you don't get charged for a visit.
