  • it is possible that you have a high resistance dis on the line. in laymans terms one of your two wires coming to the property is badly corroded ...sometimes BB will work over this while telephony won't.
if i read your earlier post correctly you only have a master socket ( you say there's only two wires connected one at 2 and one at 5 ? ) if you plug a known good phone in here and it doesn't work you can't really do any more ....the only problem is if you have had non-standard wiring in your property which you could only ascertain by looking carefully and knowing what's what

Started anothr thread similar to this a few weeks ago. Won't bother to dig it up, but what about my scenario.
Unable to make/receive calls.... no dial tone.
Engineer came out..... Fiddled with the master socket.... saw him try another phone in the socket that is visible once the front plate has been removed.

Bit more fiddling with the master socket and ..... BINGO !

    All was then well.

Got a bill for £55 which I have since queried but received no official response to.

Surely if its the master socket that needed the attention then as its there property, its their responsibility to fix it ?

Refuse to pay as BT are responsible for the line up to and including the master socket.

Did you have any extensions wired into the master socket? BT engineer could try and say they were the cause, though they could well have been the cause if you have extensions wired into the master.

Hooray - our phone line is back! Thanks for all the info. and reassurance.

BT engineer arrived today while I was out at work but rang on my mobile. Agreed to check all external wiring before calling again to get access to house. Bingo! Phone works and no access to house needed so hopefully no bill. Apparently there was a fault with the wiring connections on the pole outside.

It's a pity that BT were so adamant that the fault was ours and keen to bill us. Will check next bill carefully and follow MSE-ers advice already given if there's a charge.

    Thank you everyone!

You shouldn't get a bill, as the problem was with their wiring.

Your problem sounds familiar. Read my earlier posts.

Funny enough my phone has been pinging for about 10 minutes constantly. Just rang OH on his mobile to see if he is ring me and yes he's trying but though he had a dodgy signal!

That will have been because you still had broadband working, which at very first glance, would point to it being an internal wiring fault of somekind. If you hadn't of said broadband was still working then they may not have been so adamant that the fault was yours in the first place.

Another thing to check in future is Sky, sometimes a faulty sky box can keep the line open and thus you still being able to get broadband but No Dial Tone.
Thanks Rob (ex bt 151 for my sins)
